Idlewilde by the River
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 August 2013

Idlewilde by the River is our favorite vacation place. The location is perfect.....along the
Big Thompson River with lots of animal life - rabbits, chipmunks, beautiful hummingbirds and an occasional elk in August. A river runs through with fish to catch and our grandkids love the tether ball, horseshoes and areas for other games. The cabins are so appealing as they are set amid tall pine trees. Every year when we arrive there are profuse pots of flowers on the office porch and in the surrounding beds. Lloyd and Donna Claypool, the Managers, are are very helpful and cheerful. They help with various requests such as recommendations for dinner, need for extra towels, fix what needs fixing, etc. This is the annual vacation spot for us and our two adult children's families. We all love being here together. There is something for all ages to do. The cabins are so clean, comfy and charming. We look forward to our next visit in 2014.

Having come to Estes this year for the 65th time, I feel almost an expert on accommodations there. And if you want the real skinny on the best place to stay in Estes-- it's Idlewilde by the River. The knotty-pine cabins may not be condo-fancy, but they are tops in comfort, cleanliness, and proximity to the Big Thompson River. Just steps from the water, the sound of the mountain stream is part and parcel of Idlewilde's decor. We sit on our screened-in porch by the hour, listening to the river and the hummingbirds that feed at a feeder outside our kitchen window, while doing puzzles, talking, and watching fisherman haul in nice trout. When we get in the mood to move, a hike into RMNP is a two minute walk from our doorstep. This place is tasty as cake and refreshing as a cup of cool water on a hot summer day.

We just spent a week in Estes and had a great stay at Idlewilde. The hosts, Donna & Lloyd went above and beyond in providing all our needs, making recommendations, and even dinner reservations for us. Our cabin set within feet of the Big Thompson river and we could not get enough of listening to the sound of it. The cabin was comfortable but a bit small. It was very clean and well cared for and the location just couldn't be beat. We especially enjoyed sitting on the porch swing watching the numerous hummingbirds at our feeder. If you are looking for a quiet, friendly place to return to after your activities each day this is the place for you!

An awesome place to unwind. Sitting by the river, listening to the rippling sound, reading, taking pictures, or whatever delights you, it can not be beat. The managers are very friendly and helpful at fulfilling your needs. The rustic beauty of the place invites one to visit and come back often. Would definitely go back again.

Idlewilde is considered a "home away from home" for our family!! We are always greeted by the Claypools who do an incredible job managing the cabins. We are steps from the river with an amazing screened-in porch where we eat the majority of our meals. Staying at Idlewilde allows us to be within minutes to the Rocky Mountain National Park and downtown depending on what our plan is for the day. We come home relaxed, refreshed and start our "countdown" for the following year.

We have just returned from Donna and Lloyd's place at Idlewilde. We are so happy we stayed there! The Ataloa cabin was immaculate, so cute and it was right on the creek with fabulous views! The cabin also had a great porch with a swing on it looking over the creek; it was wonderful to hang out there and listen to the creek and watch the birds. At night we slept with the windows open and listened to the sounds of the creek. Between the sounds of the creek and the fresh mountain air we slept like babies! We went for our anniversary and it was the Best decision!! We are planning to go back as soon as possible! Also, Donna and Lloyd were so nice and friendly; it was like staying with friends!

Room Tip: Get the Ataloa cabin if it's just the two of you. It's very cozy and is quite literally rig...

"If you are looking for a private, river-side experience, this is the place! The roaring sound of the Big Thompson River and the sound of hummingbirds make this an ideal location to kick-back and soak in the beauty of Estes Park. The proprietors, Lloyd and Donna, offer a number of local coupons and suggestions to make your experience even better!"

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin close to the river--most are!
