“Loved both Deer Crest and Estes Park”
Reviewed 29 June 2009

Just got back from our Colorado vacation and this was the stand out hotel of the week. Deer Crest is a quiet motel-type resort with a pretty natural setting along the Fall River and just a short drive into town. There is an outdoor pool and chairs and patio sets along the river to just sit, relax and watch the wildlife.

We had room 312 which was a suite with a king size bed, kitchenette, A/C and a fire place. There was also a small table with chairs outside our door next to the river and in view of two amusing marmots sunning themselves just feet away.

The proprietor was friendly and easy to approach. My luggage was lost and was going to be delivered between 10pm and 2am. I let Ken know about the luggage and he left a sign on the reception door, as well as his own home phone number to call to ensure the bag was delivered since reception would be closed at that hour. A true gesture of hospitality.

Had booked 7 nights at the Deercrest after seeing the reviews. We liked it so much we stayed an extra 5 nights and could not fault it. Had very good sized room overlooking the Fall river. It was very clean and comfortable. Ken and Carrie, the owners, could not have been more helpful and friendly. We would recommend it to anyone. We would sit by the river and watch the chipmonks and marmots at play, which was quite entertaining after a day out. It is only a mile away from the Rocky Mountain National park, which is fabulous, we spent 5-6 days there and well worth the 20 dollars (for 7 days) admission. Eating out is good. Would not recommend Nicky's steakbar (the nearest restuarant) which is over priced and our food was over cooked. Apart from that one, we had good meals. Restuarants - The Wild Rose restuarant in the town. Just a short mile or so away is the Big Horn restuarant which is very reasonably priced for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Tony Pizzas is good too. If you are planning to go to the National park, the Trailhead restuarant is good to and you can watch the humming birds whilst you eat. We saw many different types of wild life from wild turkeys, elk, deer, fox, beaver and many more. If Riding is your thing then go along to the National riding school just a mile from the Rocky mountain park entrance. We had a two hour ride, and they were great.

I chose a second floor King Deluxe room at the Deer Crest for the room size and was not disappointed - it had room for a loveseat and club chair, both of which reclined - very nice for watching TV or reading. The refrigerator and microwave were convenient to have for breakfast supplies. We stayed before the summer heat hit but I noticed there is a ceiling fan as well as cross ventilation with windows.

The propery is wonderful for enjoying the outdoors - the lawn that goes up to the river's edge has chairs and swings, and each room had some sort of patio table and chairs right outside the door where you could drink coffee while watching the river run or hummingbirds feed. The sound of the river was so relaxing at night.

I liked that the motel was away from the center of town -- less people and traffic -- but I guess it could be a problem later in the summer to drive into town to eat or shop and have to find a parking space. At this time of year, it was NOT a problem and I liked being so close to RMNP.

We were probably the youngest people there by 15 years (and we are in our early 50s) but that made it pretty quiet and we weren't there to spend our days in our room anyway.

In short, this was a great riverfront property to use as home base for hiking and enjoying the cool Colorado weather.

I recently stayed at Deercrest with 2 friends for a weekend before we headed to a conference in Denver. The room was spacious and very clean. The owners were wonderful and very pleasant to talk to and had restaurant suggestions, etc. We were very impressed with the room given the rate we were paying. Free internet, free snowshoes and the hotel has a balcony where you can listen to the river. We all commented how pleased we were with everything about the hotel and our trip to Estes Park!

My husband, son and I spent Christmas 2008 at Deercrest. We had visited Deercrest before in the springtime months, but had never been there when the snow was on the ground. This visit, like all the others, was very special. The owners met our every need and provided such a friendly, special and comfortable holiday expreince. Ken and Carrie are so knowledgable about Estes Park and all of the opportunities for recreation, shopping and good food that it is almost like having dedicated concierge service at the resort. My son went snowshoeing on some pristine trails and had a wonderful time. My husband and I relaxed and enjoyed the "Currier and Ives" winter ambiance of Estes. We love visiting this lovely little town and wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else in Estes.

  • Liked — The special attention from the owners
  • Disliked — I wish Estes was closer to Denver.

Sitting by the Fall River, warm sun, cool breeze and gracious hosts all contributed to an enjoyable experience. I will certainly return here again.

My wife and I have been going to Estes Park for at least 25 years. Once our children were grown and out of the house we started staying at Deer Crest Resort. We have been staying there for the past 15 years. Ken and Carrie Arnold the owners are extremely thorough and do a great job. The rooms are very spacious and the decor very nice. They always seem to be updating the furniture and bedding. The rooms are very clean and nice. The rear of the property is right next to a babbling stream, which you can hear at night while going to sleep. Depending on the time of year, elk can be seen grazing on the green grass on the property. The quiet serenity of the property is impeccable. The swimming pool is very nice in addition to the whirlpool. For the price, we would not stay anywhere else in Estes Park. It is a resort that will keep you coming back to Estes for many years as we have been doing.
