Home Port Inn

My boyfriend and I spent a week in Lubec a week before the official tourism season started and had a WONDERFUL time! The Home Port Inn was a fantastic choice for a BB and definitely lives up to it's motto and promise of southern hospitality.

There are a few things that made our trip stand out. First, we were the only two people staying in the BB during our week stay. Suzanna made us the most wonderful breakfasts and graciously accommodated my vegetarian/vegan diet. Because we were the only guests in the house, we really got to know her and her husband Dave (an excellent source of knowledge about the area) quite well. They were very helpful and love what they do.

The Home Port Inn is a great choice for Lubec, ME. The area is incredibly remote (especially during off season) and HPI fits in quite well. You have to remember that the area doesn't really receive cell phone service and will be enjoyed most by those who love outdoor activities such as hiking and nature watching. My boyfriend and I wanted to escape technology and mainstream media for a while and we got exactly what we wanted. There is internet service if you speak with Suzanna and Dave (which came in handy when I needed to relay flight information) but I'd suggest you shut it off!

The room was comfortable, the service was excellent, the location was great for walking and Suzanna and Dave were very polite, accommodating and fun. My boyfriend and I couldn't be happier with our experience and will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 7. The ocean view at dusk was just amazing!

I am just transferring my old VHS tapes to DVD and came across our Labour Day experience of 1994 at the Home Port Inn...great to see that, if anything, it is even more excellent than it was when we made all the movies we did back then.

It was nice being in an out of the way part of the country and living in the slower lane, and Lubec is a quiet town - the easternmost community in the US where the sun comes up first. After a couple of one night stays ‘on the road’ we had a very nice 2 night stay at the Lubec Inn (N 44º 51.637’, W60º 59.295’) to recuperate on our way to the Atlantic Provinces. The inn is at the top of a hill above the town and easy to find: just keep straight ahead and go up the hill when the main road Y’s to the right to the downtown. Parking is on the street and we never had a problem finding a space nearby.
Dave and Suzannah made us feel right at home, and me being a GTech person like Dave made it even better. Our room was clean and cozy and there were no obtrusive sounds to keep us from falling asleep. Breakfasts prepared by Suzannah were hearty and we loved the biscuits that accompanied the eggs, sausage and waffles. Be advised that the breakfast dining area is down a short flight of stairs. In our room (#7) the shower faucets were reversed from the usual hot left, cold right, but worked just fine after you remember this.
Evening meals are easily found in town and you can either walk or drive the short distance. The town storefronts are all kept painted with various colors which tends to make it cheery whenever the fog roll in. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We were in #7 The Bay View (a corner room) and had a nice view of both the narrows and the inner bay...

Wonderful B&B! Old fashioned character with lots of charm on a tree-lined street in town at the top of a hill. Beautiful grounds. Just a couple blocks' walk down to the bayside restaurants and shops on Water St.

We stayed in the room titled "The Master Bedroom." It's a huge, spacious room with its own comfy couch. The queen size bed was comfortable too. The en-suite bathroom was wonderfully old-fashioned too, with some original-looking fixtures.

Breakfast was great with homemade bran muffins and plenty of mixed fresh fruits. Coffee was delicious.

Suzannah was friendly, gracious and helpful. Dave had helpful hints too!

I did not give it an automatic five-star rubber stamp of approval for the sake of an honest review for those who expect a large screen TV in every room, spacious showers, and all the modern conveniences. For seasoned B&B travellers used to standard B&B fare, the Home Port Inn is five-star.

Very charming B&B! We'd booked one night here and before we'de even unpacked our suitcases we decided to stay one more night. Dave and Suzannah are warm and charming, doing everything to make your stay enjoyable. Because we decided to stay one more night we had to change rooms, but both rooms were lovely, with lot of attention put into the details. Very comfortable beds as well.

We knew we had made a good choice when Dave established himself as a graduate of The Citadel and Georgia Tech and Susanna was from Greenville SC.

We had made our reservation for room 7 The Bay View based upon Tripadvisor reviews and speaking with Susanna on the phone.

The Bay View is exactly what it says it is - a view of Lubec Bay. The room is large and bright with an adequate private bath. The room as well as the rest of the inn was spotlessly clean.

Susanna provided us with an alarm clock - even though sunlight comes early in Lubec and cautioned us about relying on our smartphone alarm clocks which if they latch onto a Canadian cell tower will be on the Atlantic time zone which is an hour earlier than Eastern time.

With another Southern couple in residence Susanna served cheese grits with breakfast in our honor.

Dave gave excellent guidance on dinning pointing out that different restaurants take different days off so not all restaurants are open every day.

Spend time walking around town and don't miss West Quoddy Headlight which is nearby.

We had a wonderful stay and would return.

One caution - if you have mobility issues Room 7 The Bay View is up a steep flight of stairs then down 2 steps to another level. Breakfast was also on a lower level. If you have any doubts call Dave or Susanna.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues call and speak to Dave or Susanna for guidance.

We actually planned our two nights of our first stay in Lubec around the only available room at the Home Port, we were that impressed with the reviews on Trip Advisor. The reasonable prices were another attraction. Our stay was all that we hoped for, and more. Susannah is a gracious hostess who made us welcome from the moment we arrived, immediately stopping prep for the next morning's breakfast and taking us on a brief tour and escorting us to our room, explaining that the rooms have no keys. After a moment of readjustment from our city ways, we never thought about keys again. That is the magic of life in the slow lane, Lubec, Maine. (Must admit we did use the deadbolt at night, though.) The bathroom has an old-fashioned tub with a shower curtain, in the same toile pattern as the bed linens, hanging from a rod mounted on the wall. There was plenty of hot water.

Room 3 was the only room available when we booked, and it had promised a glimpse of the ocean. That glimpse never failed to impress us. To step down into the room and be faced with a view of Cobscook Bay each time, no matter how small, was a wonder. The room felt very private. We loved that it had three windows facing two directions. At times we could hear musicians from the SummerKeys adult music workshops in Lubec filter through the windows of our room, adding to the magic of those foggy afternoons. We were sorry to have missed a special concert across the street from the inn on our second night...we heard it was outstanding.

Breakfast was delicious (the first morning we had a baked egg dish with some sort of shredded potato casserole that was to die for...perhaps there was sour cream in there somewhere... and the second day featured apple pancakes.) A cold breakfast is a second option. A fellow diner loved his cereal and fruit. We are somewhat reserved in new situations, but some other guests were friendly enough to introduce themselves. We met some fascinating and interesting people there because of it. The Home Port is unpretentious and comfortable, and we hope to return sometime.
