“A great place to stay!”
Reviewed 20 May 2013

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Paca de Paja B&B outside Tucson in late April. What a fantastic place! Caroline is the perfect hostess: knowledgeable, organized, friendly, flexible, tactful. As a birdwatcher, I often find B&Bs trying places to stay, because the breakfast hour is usually right when you want to be birding. But she'll serve breakfast whenever you want it, or leave you something you can heat yourself, if she's working. And you can enjoy it out in her beautiful garden, if you like. The straw-bale house is wonderfully designed, full of good ideas: a treat to see for anyone interested in straw-bale houses or residential architecture in general. (For example, it was 98 degrees outside and 78 inside, without air conditioning.) And her garden! Full of interesting plants and delightful places to sit or stroll. Without trying very hard, we saw ~30 species of birds, and several kinds of mammals and reptiles as well.

This place is comfortable, beautiful, educational, and interesting. A total delight. Wish I had a reason to return to Tucson.

Room Tip: You're her only guests! What could be better? You have a bedroom, bathroom, sitting room, and ve...

We came to Tucson during the high season and wanted to avoid the expensive prices in town during the Gem and Mineral show. I didn't mind driving 45 minutes outside of downtown Tucson if it meant we could stay somewhere more serene. Well, serenity we found at Paca de Paja.

For an aesthete like me, I was so pleased with how beautiful and well appointed the home was. Caroline's house is full of the best of Southwest charm. Our bedroom windows faced a lovely mesquite tree and the bird feeders and waterer were filled with all sorts of birds to watch. The place was so cozy and pleasing, it was really wonderful to be there and worth the 45 minute drive to Tucson when we needed to be in the city. One of the best B&B's I've stayed at. Would definitely return again.

I won't repeat the other reviews but this is a very charming B & B southwest of Tucson. The owner is very hospitable and accommodating with extensive knowledge of the area. Breakfasts were delicious - perfect for me. The guest rooms were very spacious and comfortable. There is plenty of outdoor living space as well. This is the closest lodging to Kitt Peak National Observatory and therefore convenient if your interests lie there. One note is that there are no "decent" restaurants in the area so it is important to plan to eat other meals in Tucson. Despite this, I highly recommend this B & B.

We stayed 7 nights in March 2012. Our space was almost 1/2 the house. Caroline was very knowledgeable of the area and suggested many day trips which turned out to be just what we wanted. Would stay here again - we loved this accomodation.

Agree with all that has been written about Paca de Paya, and Caroline, the property owner.
The property is charming, tastefully decorated, and in an incredibly peaceful and beautiful location. Given the elevation, there are endless views over the Tucson plains towards distant peaks in all directions. There is a sense of tranquility that pervades the property both inside and out. It is a great place to 'catch your breath' and enjoy nature and the active birdlife around the property.
B&B includes a private sitting room, so there is a sense of space, and privacy.
Breakfast was delicious and healthy, made with quality ingredients.
Caroline was charming and informative, and provided many good tips on trails, hikes, and restaurants in Tucson.
The only potential downside with staying in such a remote location is the thin choice of dining options. The benefits, however, significantly outweigh this, and I regretted not being able to extend my stay.
Kitt Peak observatory is a must-see: the views are breathtaking!
So an unreserved recommendation!

This beautiful home in the Sonoran desert was the result of years of planning while Caroline lived in Park Ranger accommodations. She is gracious and open in sharing her knowledge of the area and a healthy, abundant breakfast in addition to the lovely and spacious bedroom plus adjacent sitting area. The nearby steakhouse she suggested was excellent. Location is 25 miles out of the city, a big plus for us. The outdoor areas welcome not only B&B guests, but water features and bird feeders invite wildlife as well. There is only one guest room, so you are the exclusive guests. It is near the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, which is a zoo and botanical garden for the region.

We chose B&B Paca de Paja as we wanted to visit Mt Kitt observatory and this B&B was relatively close instead of driving to Tucson at night. The guest area has a very comfortable bedroom plus ensuite bathroom, an adjacent living/relaxing area and a very nice patio from which guests can observe the wonderful desert flora and fauna. Breakfasts were offered according to the guests' desires and were always excellent. The B&B is certainly off the beaten track i.e. no nearby restaurants or stores but that makes it unique...as the owner says, great for stars, wildlife, birding, quiet walks and relaxed evenings. Caroline, the owner, couldn't have been more helpful. Plenty of tourist information available plus Caroline had good suggestions.

  • Liked — That fact that it was in the desert - it was magic!
  • Disliked — Nothing
