“For an active and relaxing vacation, Elkhorn is the best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2013

We have been going to Elkhorn Ranch for many years, and if you include my parents, children and grandchildren for generations. We like its location at the base of the Baboquivari Mountains, the riding in the mountains or on the desert, the food and accommodations and above all the people. The ranch's website and the Tripadvisor guest comments give a good summary of the ranch and the overall experience. My daughter says that it is her favorite place to go on vacation---a really good time, no cooking for her and the children can go anywhere/ do anything without concern.

My family has been going to Elkhorn Ranch for about 50 years and we have always loved it for the warm and friendly atmosphere the Miller family has created all these years. We have had all ages with us and we all have a good time, whether it's my 90 yo mother who loves the people and the chance to walk surrounded by the beauty of the SW or a 2 yo who was introduced to horses and cowboys. The riding is magnificent and they accommodate different rides whenever you ask for them. The food is delicious and the family style eating ensures great conversations at every meal. We always look forward to our annual visit, catching up with old friends and making new ones.

I've been to the Elkhorn several times over the past 20 years and I'm pleased to report that it never changes. I've heard it said that wilderness is the greatest luxury. If that's the case, then the Elkhorn is exceedingly luxurious! However, it's a subtle brand of luxury; no spa or marble bathtubs here (though you can get a massage!). The luxury is better defined by the level of hospitality and service. For example, they have enough staff and horses on hand that you can get exactly the kind of ride you want, even if most of the other riders want to do something completely different. Rides are always small. The quaint casitas are spotless and very comfortable, complete with wood and kindling ready to go in the fireplace. The meals are wholesome, tasty, and plentiful. It's worth the trip just for the baking. I love that there are no phones, TV, or internet in the rooms. Relaxation comes quickly and stays.

Our hosts, the Miller family, is in their third generation running the Elkorn, and they have it down to a fine art. The service is gracious and friendly. The horses are perfectly suited for all levels of trail riding, and the best I have ever ridden. I have been there with children, by myself, with my husband, and on a girlfriends trip, and found the ranch to be the perfect place for all of them.

We can't wait to go back.

We enjoyed an absolutely amazing week at Elkhorn! If you enjoy being in nature, this is your place. Beautiful nature with mountain and dessert surrounding the ranch.

We loved the concept of having meals on communal tables with open seating and there were always interesting conversations with people from all over and all ages. Everyone was open and interested in the other guests and our girls (9 and 12 years) would be always included in the conversation. The meals were homecooked and wholesome and delicious.

The rides were fantastic - genuinely friendly wranglers who made sure we were happy and safe. It is more a hike on a horse than active riding, but we really enjoyed every minute of it! The horses were amazingly safe and well trained - I felt very relaxed riding and was able to enjoy the nature.

Our cabin was roomy with 2 bedrooms, a sitting room w fireplace and a bathroom. Nice quiet sitting area in front of the cabin with lots of birds to watch. We slept wonderful!

Everyone single person of the staff was always genuinely friendly and helpful - we felt so welcomed! A big thank you to the Miller Family - we'll be back next year!

Just got back from a week there. Spectacular views, universally wonderful people, and great rides for all age groups in the dessert and mountains.

The wranglers are genuine and gracious and the rest of the staff is great too. We met folks from all over and all ages...this place is perfect for families and friends...go there...you'll love it!

Room Tip: Try the Road Runner cabin...quiet location with gorgeous views

My husband, 12 year old son and I stayed at the Elkhorn Ranch for a week at the end of February 2011. The ranch is in the middle of the desert surrounded by mountains. There is cactus and mesquite bushes everywhere. The food was homecooked and extremely plentiful. We enjoyed the meet and greet parties on Sunday and Thursday nights and the picnic on Saturday afternoon, in which adult beverages (beer, wine, and margaritas) were provided. Mary and Charlie (the owners) are genuinely nice people and went out of their way to make sure we were happy and had all our needs met. My son enjoyed the scavenger hunts, tennis court, swimming pool, and of course the riding. We had our own personal guide, Nick, who we can highly recommend. He took us to the most unusual and unique places where we were really able to experience the heart of the desert. He also was highly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna in the area. He was able to satisfy my husband and son's loping desires and we were able to do some nice lopes several times a day.

We were the only people there who had not been to the Elkhorn before, but all of the other guests were extremely welcoming and friendly. We felt like we made lots of friends by the end of the trip. Our cottage was roomy and had a nice fireplace. Wood and birdseed were provided in ample quantities, so we were able to make a fire every night and watch all the interesting birds during the day. Our horses were well suited to us and were very well trained. We felt extremely safe while riding them.

I give this place an excellent rating! Beautiful, quite setting & landscape~ Rooms were great, food was excellent..beyond belief, staff and wranglers gave us full service, we could feed the birds on our patio...they provided the seed..saw many of the wildlife close up. Best horses and tack around....the trails whether in the mountains, or in the dessert were breath taking~ Lord willing, I want our riding group to go back again next year~
