Sabino Canyon is a beautiful desert canyon in the eastern foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains offering a taste of desert wilderness, vegetation and occasionally, animals. I visit Sabino Canyon every time I come to Tucson. This last time, I ran a 5 km loop that included parts of the Esperero and Rattlesnake Trails. The run was easy enough but you have to pay attention to your footing to avoid tripping on the uneven trail. In the past, I’ve hiked up the 6 mile round trip to Blackett’s Ridge. It’s well worth the slog to enjoy the panoramic views of Tucson and surrounding mountains. The main road is a option for those who prefer solid paved ground. Many families with strollers walk and run these roads. I’ve also enjoyed the tram rides in Sabino Canyon with younger family members.
