Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway
Ranked #4 of 302 things to do in Tucson

Our family spent a beautiful fall day exploring Mt Lemmon. We pulled over at every official Vista for picture taking along the way up to the top. Our favorite Vistas were at Molino Canyon and Windy Point, where we were able to actually get into nature to walk around the sites and climb up big boulders to see even further. The scenery is truly spectacular. We stopped to lunch at one of the picnic areas. There are so many hiking trails to choose from; we ended up hiking the Butterfly Trail towards the top of the mountain. Aptly named, we were surprised to see that even in November at 8000 feet, there really were tiny butterflies flitting about. We finally reached the top about 4 1/2 hours after we started (we really took our time), and bought some delicious, fresh fudge from the General Store in Summerhaven. We then spent the rest of our afternoon and evening at the top of Mt Lemmon at our pre-arranged sky-viewing program with the U of A Sky Center. When our time gazing at the stars and planets through the huge telescope was done, we were treated to the view of city lights below us as we descended the mountain heading back to town. All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend the day!

A long drive however it is worth it if you enjoy stunning views. There are plenty of restroom facilities on the drive and a nice restaurant at the top - the road is very good. Good places to pull over and gawk. The change of landscape from the lower elevations to the top are interesting. There are some of the coolest rock formations on the planet on the drive. The top is almost 10,000 ft above sea level. Interesting afternoon.

We really enjoyed the drive up Mt. Lemmon. It is amazing to see the different changes in climate as you go up the mountain. The top at 9000' starts to resemble the northern Cascades! Very cool area to explore, lots of great views, highly recommend.

20 plus miles from the hot desert of Tucson to almost 9,000 feet in a pine forest. A windy very scenic road and the change in climate zones and indigenous flora was amazing. It was really hot that day in Tucson so we brought books along and relaxed in 63 degree temps. The icing on the cake was the restaurant at the top. See my review of Sawmill Run

What an amazing experience! Worth the drive to Tucson. Everything they say is true....the climate change, the topography, the vegetation and the views. Do not miss this.
