Nice area for an outing. Areas to hike and have a picnic with the hubby or the family. there is one area to hike that is nicely paved. The hikes can be fairly easy and short up to hikes that can take the day. Make sure you pack the water you need. We usually buy a yearly pass.

“lots of birds”

lots of benches over looking well stocked feeders at the Santa Rita Lodge. No place for public to eat except ice-cream at the Gift shop, which unfortunately closes in mid afternoon

“stop at the bird feeders at the resorts if you are a birder”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

The Santa Rita Lodge is the first stop to see birds. They have at least 10 different types of feeders and lots of chairs to watch. What a delight to see 8 or so different hummingbirds right up close as well as innumerable species of other birds attracted to the feeders ( including hawks!). The small gift store has hot tea and coffee and assorted snacks including yummy cookies for purchase along with books and the usual gift shop items. Consider staying at Santa Rita for more nature watching but be sure to stop here on your way to a hike. We then proceeded up to the end of the road where we hiked to Baldy peak where we saw innumerable "new" birds for us including the Painted Redstart. One of the stars of the canyon-- the Elegant Trogon which nests in sycamores along this trail was not to be seen-- apparently not yet migrated back to nest in the holes in these trees but maybe next year. Worth the visit-- some hikes are "strenuous" with lots of loose rock and steep-- take hiking poles for the trip down and wear good shoes with non skid soles. Other hikes are more flat. The parking is extremely limited so on weekends make sure to get there early.

“Beauty lies ahead”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

Madera Canyon is easily accessed from Green Valley, AZ (25 miles south of Tucson) and lies in the beautiful Santa Rita Mountains. There are a couple B&Bs that look special (we only took a day trip). Many, many varieties of birds, especially Humming Birds, are prevalent throughout the canyon.
