“a perfect stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

My wife and I stopped over for one night and loved every minute of it. The owner was a lovely lady that made us very welcome. Our room was very cosy, had a unique charm about it, and was really nicely decorated....nothing like I had stayed in before. The house was only a couple of blocks away from the restaurant/bar strip, where we also found a great place to eat. When we returned, we sat out on the porch for a while watching the electrical storm whilst keeping Laszlo the residant moggie company. In the morning Lea the owner cooked us a lovely breakfast casserole, although to us Brits it would be a Frittata, very nice indeed. We also had scones and fruit on offer too. Overall, this really is a wonderful place to stay. Highly recommended, and thankyou for your hospitality.

Lea and Ken are doing a great job keeping this landmark afloat. With the help of Laszlo the cat! We spent two night here while on a long weekend in the area and enjoyed the ambience and the history.

The morning we left a water main in the cellar broke so we went without showers but got a reduced rate for the night!

Despite that Lea cooked her usual tasty breakfast which they serve starting at a nice time 7:30 good for those of us who like to get up and get going with our day...

With a great porch for relaxing and a primo location near UA, this B&B has a lot going for it.

This was our first time at the Big Blue House. We stayed upstairs, in the two room suite with two of our teenage daughters. The rooms were of ample size, comfortable and very clean. The bathroom is small, but that is part of staying in a historic home. The suite was private and quiet. The house itself is a Tucson gem- walking distance to 4th Ave and U of A. I don’t know that you could find a better location, particularly if you are visiting the University. They obviously take a lot of pride in the restoration and care of the home. We loved the decorative details of the room as well as the intricate and beautiful painting of the exterior of the home. Another surprisingly wonderful amenity were the morning breakfasts. We had a wonderful selection of monkey bread, fresh fruit, scones and quiche, all fresh and delicious. Leah is an extremely gracious host. We would definitely stay here again!

This was our second visit last week for 2 nights at this B&B. We stayed in the same room #5 as last year. We enjoyed our visit just as much this year as last year! The breakfast was excellent each morning. We enjoyed conversations with Leah and Ken the owners as well as other guest from Washington state. We plan on returning again next spring 2014.

We stayed here two nights. After considering restaurant suggestions as well as an option to get sandwiches at the Time Market, we decided to do the latter as the old-fashioned front porch was so inviting. The fall evenings were the perfect temperature to relax with a bottle of wine and watch bicyclists and walkers go by. After a good night's sleep on a good mattress, we enjoyed a baked egg dish with a most delicious homemade salsa. Fresh fruit and strong coffee rounded out the breakfast. We enjoyed our stay in this university neighborhood.

Sometimes you want so badly to write a glowing review, especially when you get a chance to visit with the charming people that run the B&B, but in all fairness I have to report OUR experiences as they happened and not as I wished they would have been.

First of all, let me focus on the wonderful things about this inn. The location is absolutely perfect. We were able to dine and shop on funky 4th Ave., visit the open-air bars in the university district, and attend UA football, all within suitable walking distance. Leah makes the most delicious breakfast in the morning and we loved the intimate dining area. We enjoyed sitting on the rockers on the wraparound porch and having Laslo, the cat purring in my lap. (More on Laslo later).

Leah escorted us up the stairway to our room, #6 "Uncle Dukes" room. We knew each room had a private bath, unfortunately it's not mentioned that it is across the hall not en-suite, requiring entering a common area to use the facility. We would have preferred to know that before hand as we would definately had chosen a different room.

The spacious room was charmingly decorated in antiques, but all we could focus on was the filthy stained rug centered on the crumb-studded hardwood floors, the torn bed ensemble, and the once-pretty peach sheets that had mottled platter-sized bleach-stains all over them. When you encounter these things in the beginning, then you start adding up the other failings: coffee maker but no pot or coffee for that matter; drawers that had crumbs and "things" left behind; water cooler that only dispensed hot water, not chilled; electrical outlet with no cover, leaving exposed wires; no soap even though there was an empty dispenser sitting by the sink for 3 days. All giving the feeling of neglect and kind of leaves you a "creepy" feeling that it hadn't been cleaned since the last guest check out. About Laslo (we are most assuredly cat-lovers, sharing our home with 2 felines) although he is a sweet cat, he obviously has peed in the entry and possibly in our private bathroom upstairs as the distinct odor was very prominent in both places during our stay.

It doesn't please me to point out these things because I truly believe that the owners care deeply about this place and are doing the best they can. However guests have a right to expect cleanliness and a well-maintained room.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, you may want a room on the front or right side of the house and to run t...
