“Great Historic Hotel Highly Recommended”
Reviewed 21 August 2012

I have been coming to the Hawthorne Hotel for some years now and often bring overseas visitors at Halloween, so that they can experience first-hand the beautifully decorated homes in the historic district and the parade, which starts on the Common just outside the hotel. Learning about the horrific events leading up to the witch trials of Salem is always an eye-opener for visitors, but Salem also has a wonderful maritime history, which can be explored along the waterfront and at the Peabody-Essex Museum and Visitor's Center. Just after New Year is another great time to visit, when the hotel is still decorated for Christmas. The giant poinsettia "tree" in the lobby is spectacular, instead of the usually Xmas tree. The hotel is dog-friendly, and the Common is wonderful for walks before breakfast and in the evening, when there are few people about.

On my last visit at Halloween, we had Suite #612 in the hotel, with its own hallway, an enormous sitting room (complete with a table and comfortable chairs for a picnic), a large bedroom with a comfortable king-size bed, and a good-sized bathroom. Other amenities included a refrigerator hidden away in a closet and plenty of space for luggage. It wasn't until later that I found our suite was haunted, but I was disappointed that we saw no ghost, even though it was a likely time of year for apparitions!

Breakfast in the main dining room is always enjoyable at the Hawthorne, where I recommend the smoked salmon. Just after the New Year, if you are lucky, there may be baked lobster on the menu--I even had the dining room to myself and received excellent service from the staff on one occasion.

Free parking is conveniently located adjacent to the hotel. However, to see most of the sights of historic Salem and the Peabody-Essex Museum, I recommend that you go on foot. Then you don't have to worry about finding a parking space on the busy, sometimes narrow streets of Salem. Besides it is great exercise!

Dear Bear59:

It is so timely to receive your review of your stay from last October this week, as we are in serious gear-up mode for Halloween now. We love reading such detailed reviews of our guests’ stays in the hotel, and yours is especially pertinent as you hit the high spots of a visit to Salem and the Hawthorne Hotel.

It is clear that you have stayed here multiple times, including over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, so you have really seen several aspects of our hotel. You can tell that we delight in dressing our hotel up for the different events, and you have conveyed what a visit in those times would be like to future travelers.

I am so happy to see your mentions of the Peabody Essex Museum in your review. While many people come for the Salem Witch Trials history, we hope that they find PEM because it is certainly a world class attraction, which no traveler to Salem should miss.

Thank you so much for writing this excellent review. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Warm regards,

You can't beat the location on the village square. It's a nice hotel, but it depends on what room size you get. The standard rooms are VERY small. We were told this, but I was still surprised. For the money ($155 w/ tax & AAA discount), I'd get a B&B or pay for a bigger room, especially if you're there for more than 1 or 2 nights or if you're with someone who is over 5'8". If I had been w/ my husband, who is 6', the bed would have been too short. The bathroom was pretty small too &could have used a soap dish at least. I liked the lobby & the bar, which is nice, but could have had a little lower lighting at night. Just a little too bright for my taste. We had drinks there in comfy chairs. Parking was fine. Didn't like the check out time, however. If I'm checking in at 4 pm (although they did allow us to check in alittle earlier since the room was ready), I expect, however, if check in time is 4, check out time should be 12, not 11. All in all, I'd only go again if I got a bigger room & that would depend on the price.

Room Tip: Pay more for a bigger room or find a B&B w/ bigger rooms.

Dear chatnoir:

Thank you for taking the time to write this review to tell other people about your stay in the Hawthorne Hotel. We do try very hard to fully disclose to our guests exactly what size each room is, including the square footage, but it is still a surprise to some people. If you have any suggestions on how we can be clearer about this issue, I would love to speak with you on the phone. We are always looking for our guests’ perspective. You can call me at 978-744-4080 and just ask for me.

Our check=in and check=out times are also generated by unique conditions of our hotel. With only 93 rooms, we have 13 different room types. While “cookie-cutter” hotels have little character, they also have very interchangeable rooms, so if something goes “wrong” in one room, they can just assign you another carbon copy room when you arrive, and can juggle availability while they fix things that need repair before the next guest can check in. With many of our room types that consist of just a few rooms, we just cannot do that and still have a guaranteed check-in time.

Thank you for allowing me to explain that particular issue.

We do sincerely appreciate your stating that you would return again, and we would love for you to do just that. Perhaps you will find that there is exactly the kind of room that will make you happy the next time you travel here, and I would be happy to personally assist you in choosing one.

Warm regards,

This hotel has an old time charm that is lost of many "chain" hotels. Considering this hotels is also in the heart of Salem, you will not find a better place to stay. We've stayed here many times and have had a great stay every time. Our room faced the city, had two queens and two bath rooms. The decor is kind of a old time elegance and everyone is friendly. This is one of the three places we always stay in Salem.

My wife, 4 year old son and my self decided at the last minute to travel to Salem for an overnight stay. We called the Hotel on a Friday afternoon to inquire about availibility. They usually have a two night minimum on weekends in season. We asked if they had anything available for just Saturday night. The associate was very accomadating and allowed us to book for just Saturday night. We arrived early saturday morning, way before check in, and they allowed us to store our bags in the hotel and park in the lot. We then set out for a day in Salem. The hotel is located right in the middle of everything so you don't need your car once you get there. The lobby is very nice and immediatley you get the old historic hotel feel from the lobby. We went back to the hotel about 4 pm to get our room and everything was ready and waiting for us. We picked our bags up and went to our room. The rooms are very quaint, not huge by modern hotel standards, but very nice, clean and keeping with the historic feel of the hotel. The bathrooms are very small, but again, very nice and very clean. Any staff that we came accross during our short stay was very friendly and helpful.

The bed was very comfortable and the sofa was a sofa bed and my 4 year said he got a great night sleep on the sofa bed. Lots of comfortable pillows where on the bed, there was an iron, blow dryer, etc. all the things needed.

If you want to stay in a hotel that is reminder of yesteryear while visiting an hisotoric city this is the one to stay in. I wish our trip was a little longer but it was a great stay for a last minute trip.

Dear auwareagel:

You have written such a well-detailed review of your stay in the Hawthorne Hotel. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this for the benefit of future travelers to Salem, MA.

We do try to put as many of the “things” we think will add to our guests’ comfort into our guest rooms, from twice the number of pillows that most hotels provide to a nice flat-panel TV with true high-definition programming, from iPod/iPhone docking station clock radios to well-positioned make-up mirrors, all chosen with an eye toward making you feel as welcome as we can.

We look forward to welcoming you back again, hopefully this time for a multiple day stay so you can really relax and enjoy all there is to do in this area.

This hotel is incredibly well-located--near museums and the waterfront. An easy-in and out parking lot is another plus. The front staff was outstanding, always ready to answer questions and often going out of their way to help us. We had two perfectly fine casual meals in the Tavern on the Green, but we found the main dining room, Nathaniels, to be really excellent. Because the main hotel was booked, we spent our four night stay in the adjacent guest house. The room was very pretty, and we made out fine, despite the tiny bathrooms. (Don't stay there unless you are reasonably sized!) My husband did find the air conditioner noisy, but that was our only complaint. We definitely look forward to another visit to the Hawthorne.

Dear RL5127:

Your review is the epitome of what we try to tell the world about the Hawthorne Hotel and we love how you wrote it! Thank you so much for all your kind remarks about our hotel staff. We will be sure to share this with them.

You will be pleased to know that we replaced all of the air conditioning units in the four rooms of the Fidelia Bridges Guest House (where you stayed) just this past week, and we are looking hard at a plan to make the showers in those bathrooms a tad bit larger and more user-friendly. It was actually an idea we received from another guest that gave us the kernel of the idea of what we could do.

We are so happy that you loved our dining facilities, especially Nathaniel’s. It is not always easy to get hotel guests to stay “in” for their dining experiences, because travelers tend to think that there must be better restaurants elsewhere, and they sometimes don’t even try us out. Thank you for letting future travelers hear from you that they should give us a try.

We sincerely appreciate all your kind words, and we appreciate you for taking the time to write this review. We look forward to your return.

The Hawthorne was a charming, small, eccentric hotel with a friendly and helpful staff. We loved the room and didn't find it too small - The king size bed was very comfortable and every room had lots of character. Near everything you would want to see in Salem. (loved the padded elevator!) We will certainly go back.
