I have been coming to the Hawthorne Hotel for some years now and often bring overseas visitors at Halloween, so that they can experience first-hand the beautifully decorated homes in the historic district and the parade, which starts on the Common just outside the hotel. Learning about the horrific events leading up to the witch trials of Salem is always an eye-opener for visitors, but Salem also has a wonderful maritime history, which can be explored along the waterfront and at the Peabody-Essex Museum and Visitor's Center. Just after New Year is another great time to visit, when the hotel is still decorated for Christmas. The giant poinsettia "tree" in the lobby is spectacular, instead of the usually Xmas tree. The hotel is dog-friendly, and the Common is wonderful for walks before breakfast and in the evening, when there are few people about.
On my last visit at Halloween, we had Suite #612 in the hotel, with its own hallway, an enormous sitting room (complete with a table and comfortable chairs for a picnic), a large bedroom with a comfortable king-size bed, and a good-sized bathroom. Other amenities included a refrigerator hidden away in a closet and plenty of space for luggage. It wasn't until later that I found our suite was haunted, but I was disappointed that we saw no ghost, even though it was a likely time of year for apparitions!
Breakfast in the main dining room is always enjoyable at the Hawthorne, where I recommend the smoked salmon. Just after the New Year, if you are lucky, there may be baked lobster on the menu--I even had the dining room to myself and received excellent service from the staff on one occasion.
Free parking is conveniently located adjacent to the hotel. However, to see most of the sights of historic Salem and the Peabody-Essex Museum, I recommend that you go on foot. Then you don't have to worry about finding a parking space on the busy, sometimes narrow streets of Salem. Besides it is great exercise!
