After 3 day on the Boston Harbor, we spent 1 day in Salem and were very pleased. We had a room with 2 queen beds and 2 bathrooms. The rooms were very comfortable and roomy and clean. Erverything is in walking distance and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. One tip- my son took a shower and did not put the curtain liner inside the tub and the floor flooded.

Dear RJZ232:

Thank you so much for your kind words about your stay in our hotel. I love your title, naming us a Character Hotel, because that certainly implies the many points of differentiation between our hotel and the standard “box” hotel that is so prevalent anymore when one travels.

We also appreciate your noticing how clean our hotel is. Our housekeeping team works very hard to keep on top of each detail, and when our guests notice, it makes a lot of difference to us.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our special hotel soon.

Warm regards,

We stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel August 24-26 in room 325, the room was fantastic. The beds and pillows were very cozy and comfortable. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Nathaniel's Restaurant is an excellent place to eat, the food was great !!!! We will absolutely stay at the Hawthorne again !!!!!!! The hotel is located in walking distance to all the attractions which makes it very convenient.

Dear Mary B:

Thank you so much! Your reviews certainly started my day off in a perfect way. We are always so happy to make our guests happy.

The room you stayed in is one-of-a-kind, actually two rooms put together with a passageway through one section of the bathroom. It is a kind of mini-suite, which works out very well for families, or for two people who like to travel together but not necessarily share the same sleeping quarters.

We are very pleased that you took the time to share your experience with other travelers. Thank you again, and we can't wait for you to return!

We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is really clean. The beds, bedding, and pillows are very comfortable. The front desk staff were all very friendly and helpful, especially Jess who checked us in and stored our bikes for us. The hotel is centrally located to all the restaurants, shops, and attractions. We didn't use our car for 2 days, we walked everywhere! There is a nice park with a playground and a walking/jogging track right across the street. We would love to stay here again.

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms with 1 queen bed in each that connected via the bathroom. This is nice for families.

Dear Michelle W:

If we could give an award for the most succinctly-written review, we would have to strongly consider this one. You managed to fully describe all of the attributes of staying at the Hawthorne Hotel, from our super-clean rooms and lovely beds, to the friendliness and helpfulness of our staff, not to mention the ease of just parking right her on property and having everything so close that you could walk everywhere.

Thank you so much for mentioning Jess by name. Whenever our team members are recognized like this by our guests, we make sure to let them know in a very special way.

I am so glad that we were able to make you happy and that you had an enjoyable and relaxing visit here in Salem, MA. Thank you so much for writing this kind review.

The Hawthorne makes a nice change from chain hotels, but at a chain hotel price. The staff couldn't be more accomodating. The handicapped-accessible rooms are especially nice considering that they've been retrofitted into an older property. My elderly mother really enjoyed her stay and found the accomodations easy to negotiate. The breakfasts are terrific. Try the waffles!

Dear revrenn:

It certainly doesn’t get much better than this kind of review! Thank you so much for letting us and other TripAdvisor readers know about the kind of experience that you had here at the historic Hawthorne Hotel. We do make a big effort to provide the highest value that we are able to do, and we realize that the kind of experience that each and every guest has is of the utmost importance.

I am so happy that you enjoyed the waffles. We do go out of our way to provide the tastiest menu items that we can, and having an excellent waffle is just one of those things, along with making our own fresh and traditional Hollandaise sauce for our Eggs Benedict, and using real local maple syrup, that sets our breakfasts apart from those of a standard restaurant.

We look forward to having you with us again in the near future.

Sincerely,

Juli Lederhaus

I've stayed at the Hawthorne many times over the years and have enjoyed each visit. In general, the food at the Hawthorne is very good to outstanding, especially in the tavern. I've stayed in one of the large rooms with two beds and two bathrooms as well as in a few of the Ansonia rooms, which are the smallest and the least expensive--though still not cheap by any means. Regardless of size, the rooms have always been very clean and comfortable. What I like most about the Hawthorne is the friendly, unstuffy service, the cozy atmosphere, and the superb location. Free parking in one of two hotel-owned lots is a bonus. And now for the quirks: the elevators are small and extremely slow. During one of my visits to the hotel only one was working, a nightmare scenario when your room is on the 5th floor. Checking in for our most recent stay, I was surprised to find only one bedside reading light in our double-bedded room. We were able to move a floor lamp to the bedside, but we shouldn't have needed to rearrange anything in a room that goes for an average $150 a night. Another minor issue is the fact that on the complimentary coffee and tea table in the lobby, one coffee urn was empty, and a second was almost empty; the milk pitcher was empty; the napkins were almost gone; and there was no wastebasket for used paper cups, sugar wrappers, etc., so guests left their rubbish on a table. Cell phone reception in the lobby was dismal, but the free wi-fi connection in our room more than compensated. Overall, it was an enjoyable stay, and we look forward to returning.

Dear Suzanne202:

We are so happy to read of your overall enjoyment and satisfaction with our hotel. We do realize that it is a bit of a quirky place, but we know that what we have the most control over is our own attitudes towards our guests, and to that end we try to provide exactly what you describe – friendly, unstuffy service.

Many guests are pleased by our on-site parking because we have the most spaces of any lodging establishment in Salem.

I am very disappointed about the situation you described with the coffee service station in the lobby, and I do wish you would contact me about that. It would be important for me to know if this was a one-time occurrence, whether or not that was a recent experience or something that happened in the past, and any other details that would help us retrain the staff member(s) responsible for maintaining that station. If you have a moment to call me at 978-744-4080 or toll-free at 800-729-7829 I would be very appreciative.

Thank you again for writing and for giving us such high praise overall. We sincerely appreciate your loyalty evidenced by your multiple stays with us.

Warm regards,

The Hawthorne is a large old hotel adjacent to Salem Common, a couple blocks from the pedestrian mall (and its witch shops and museums), and about three blocks from the marina and coast...a fine location. The hotel has a large, comfortable lobby. There is an expensive restaurant (good breakfasts for two approach $50) and a less expensive restaurant (the "tavern"). Our room was a step above the basic room. It was large, with two remodeled bathrooms and two closets, and a good HD TV. Unfortunately, the bathroom lights and very-loud fans are operated with a single switch, so you have to listen to the roar of the fans if you want to see what you are doing; also, our water pressure was low.. Internet service was generally good, but apparently overwhelmed by our internet-intensive group in the hotel; a very lengthy phone message tried to get residents to use the internet in a different way, but our light wouldn't stop blinking after the message...and most of the staff didn't know how to stop it. The function rooms for our group worked well and the associated food (including a large group dinner) exceeded expectations. Parking is free, provided there is room.
We were going to rate the Hawthorne as 4-stars, and have done so. But we were put off by an emailed survey several days later in which the hotel asked how we would rate the hotel on a 5-point scale. If you give it 3 stars or better, you are then presented with a link to TripAdvisor; otherwise, I suppose not. That is the end of the survey: it is not a real survey but rather an attempt to "tilt the playing field" on TripAdvisor, so be a bit aware of a preponderance of favorable reviews for this hotel.

Unfortunately we only were able to stay at the Hawthorne hotel one night. What a great surprise to find such a beautiful throwback hotel. Room was a little small but, we didn't care because it felt authentic to the town. Everything seems old but it is completely updated. The location was great and Salem was a wonderful little town to stroll through. We would definitely stay here again but, for a longer time.

We are so sorry you could only stay with us for one night, but are very happy to have pleased you so very much. Thank you so much for writing this for future travelers, so they can see your opinion of our hotel.

Salem is definitely worth more than a one-night stay, especially with the amazing Peabody-Essex Museum located just steps from the Hawthorne Hotel.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
