“Friendly, Clean, best location!”
Reviewed 23 March 2012

We live in NJ - our son and daughter-in-law live in Massachusetts. Whenever we visit them, we love to stay at the Salem Waterfront Hotel. The hotel is in the best location for touring Salem. The staff is the BEST! They made us feel like we were "home". I'm speaking of the front desk and the restaurant - top notch! The food in the restaurant was outstanding. It was sad to leave the staff and the comfort of the hotel. We can't wait to go back again!

Room Tip: We stayed in a handicapped room - great walk-in, roll-in shower - easy access for wheelchairs) and...

We enjoyed a pleasant stay during a visit to Salem to attend a conference at Salem State. The staff was welcoming and helpful, and the location so convenient we were able to do more site seeing. We saw wonderful exhibits at the Peabody-Essex Museum and fit in a tour to the House of the Seven Gables. Several excellent restaurants were within easy walking distance. The housekeeping standards are especially noteworthy. Our room was quite likely the cleanest hotel room we have ever encountered.

A glorified motel with a great location and attentive staff, but also with hard beds and thin walls.

Top three attributes are location, location, location. Easy walk to all major Salem attractions and restaurants. The staff was very helpful on multiple requests, ranging from advice on where to eat to dealing with noisy neighbors. Wi-Fi was free and of a high speed, though the router chokes completely at peak evening hours (need a techie to reconfigure their network). Room service was prompt and the food was good. The facility was very clean and well-maintained.

But fundamentally, a hotel should be a decent place to sleep. In those terms, it was more like camping in a state park. The beds were hard, with very thin padding over the steel springs, which could be felt simply by touching the mattress. We woke up with sore shoulders and hips from lying on these beds.

Our room, and apparently most rooms, have communicating doors with other rooms. Sounds travel through these easily. We heard everything our neighbors played on TV. We heard them talk. We heard them have sex. And probably vice-versa. On the other side, another neighbor was able to make our headboard shake for 15 minutes by doing...who knows what. And from below, there was the night a high-school dance was held in the ballroom beneath us, with the dance music clearly audible through the floor.

The staff seemed prepared to give us another room, but they were sold out. I suspect we still would have had problems with the doors and the beds.

The hotel looks nice and appears to have been recently renovated. But there are signs of what it really is in the old CRT TV sets and the tiny-to-the-point-of-useless swimming pool.

It's a motel charging hotel rates (and offering a few good hotel services) because it's in a great downtown location.

Room Tip: Avoid noise by asking for a top-floor room and requesting something without communicating doors. Ins...

We were in Salem over St. Patty's Day weekend for a wedding. This hotel is in a great location - it's central to most touristy stuff in Salem. Staff were really great and accommodating. The room was lovely with a great view of the marina. We got the prepaid rate which was really a great value.

My fiancé and I stayed overnight on St. Patrick's Day. We booked a King Suite and it was amazing! We had a separate bedroom with a king sized bed, a small kitchen area with a wet bar and a sitting/dining area. We didn't partake in any of the room service or eat in the restaurant but we did look at the menu and we thought the prices for both were very reasonable for what you would expect to pay at a high end hotel. We will definitely book another stay at this hotel. One of the things that impressed me the most was we had no sooner walked into our room and the front desk called to make sure everything was okay with our room!! Usually you can only expect to get this question when you check out.

My boyfriend and I spent the weekend at the waterfront hotel to celebrate our birthdays, so we spent more than we usually do on hotels, and it was worth the extra money. First, we were treated to chocolate covered strawberries and champagne when we arrived, and we got a gift card for the Regatta Pub as a part of our room package.
We were very pleased with the quality of the room. It was clean and the beds were very comfortable. The staff were polite and helpful; they made it feel like they were happy we were there.
The location could not be any better, right next to the water and right in the middle of the downtown with restaurants and shopping, etc. I only wish we had more time to explore because there is so much to do in Salem.

Room Tip: The second floor had the fitness center down the hall.
