Booked and paid for a room at 3:00PM. At 9:00PM they called to say they didn't have a room for us. Sounds like someone got a nice tip to give our room away. They were rude and nasty over the phone and actually blamed us for the problem. They didn't offer any help to find us another room. They just said no room so don't bother showing up. STAY FAR FAR AWAY!

Room Tip: Find a different hotel!

Stayed two nights because we wanted to see the sights and learn some of the local history. This place was no more than average. Beds were soso. We had a suite which gave us a little more room. Older place. Good location for a base but you have to use your car to get to middle of town. Parking was tight. Best to park where ever you can leave it for the day and use the Red Line Trolley. You can jump on and off all day for one price.

Room Tip: Get the first floor if you can. No elevator.

My paranoia paid off. I never bring my luggage into room until the bed has been checked. I went to this room and pulled off the sheets and inspected the mattress. Low and behold a clue to Bed Bugs. There were many flecks of black in the sewed areas. I flipped over the box spring and found some fecal residue with a LIVE BED BUG. I reported the incident and the front office and maintenance person did not believe me. I went to the room with them and showed all the items. They all but called me a liar!!!

On the upside:
Inexpensive
Clean
Close to town
Small discounts given at a few restaurants
Keurig coffee machine in each room...although just a single cupper

On the downside:
Our GPS seemed to be possessed and would not help us in the least, so bring printed directions with you. My brother came from NH to meet us, used a different GPS system and had the same issues. Just be prepared.
Yes...scary looking lot of apartments/rentals to the left of the property...that DID seem to be rented to those with obvious struggles of some sort. A lot of drunk yelling going on at night.
They have window A/C units but you have to part the curtain and expose your room. Plan on rigging a towel or something to cover up the space left when you have the A/C going.
The décor really is from 1982, BUT what they have is clean. Not perfect, but not moldy or buggy or gross. Just kind of goofy.
There is no "Do Not Disturb" or "Maid, please make up the room" signs to post on your door when you head to town or go to bed. Just bear that in mind.

Lastly, this is neither good nor bad, but there are two rescue cats that reside in the office. I loved them and they are very sweet and friendly, but if a cat allergy is something an adult in your party has to deal with, make sure the non-allergic adult does the checking in and out.

Probably would shop around and stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms that feel the safest and least traffic are the far corners on the upper level.

Felt this was a good price for tourist area. Room was clean and very spacious. Comfortable beds, nice pillows. Keurig coffeemaker in room with plenty of coffee. Certainly possible to walk to attractions in town but we opted to drive.

Staff is friendly and helpful. We were referred a nice seafood restaurant two blocks away that gives a small discount to hotel guests - The Black Lobster.

They boast of free WiFi but the signal was too weak and did not transmit to our room.

Room Tip: I would stay here again if I were to take an overnight trip to Salem.

after getting ourselves out of boston ma south station and their totally rude employees, we fortunately received information from a local resident who helped us get to salem from wonderland ma after leaving south station. we were very disappointed with the treatment we received in boston ma south station. we arrive at the clipper ship inn. they were expecting us. I had called earlier in the morning to let Suzanne know of our arrival. Suzanne was gone by the time we got to the hotel. the hotel clerk welcomed us gave us dunking donuts cards, informed us about mentioning our hotel to the restaurants located across the street to receive 10% discount. we were hungry by this time. this discount helped out a lot. the dunking donuts $3.00 discount helped out a lot too. we ate breakfast there for the 3 days we stayed. next day after arrival Suzanne was in the hotel office. she gave us a map of salem common and recommended the trolley, and the museums, everything. Suzanne made our trip and stay worthwhile. the hotel room was perfect. we slept well, took great showers, had plenty of space, everything was within walking distance. this was our 1st time in salem and am glad to say it was a great overall experience. wouldn't mind visiting again. and our hotel of choice would be the clipper ship inn again. the hotel was by the water. it was a great stay. I cannot say this enough. thanks to Suzann and the staff at the clipper ship inn for their hospitality on our stay.

Room Tip: no tips needed. great hotel.

What a HORROR STORY ! We did not realize until check in and in our room we started noticing transients everywhere on the property when you drive in to the Clipper Ship Inn on the left (look like Bates Motel Shacks) come to find out LOW INCOME ROOMS. I feared for my life the entire time we were there and every time we left the Clipper we put all of our valuables in the trunk. We had maid service every other day and the MAIDS STOLE FROM US. The Clipper Ship Inn should be INSPECTED immediately possibly condemned and turned into a ROOMING HOUSE if you are going to charge top dollar to stay there especially if you are going to have to see drunks, drug addicts and the homeless all day every day and maids that steal. EVERYTHING I HAVE STATED IS A FACT - STAY AWAY, FAR AWAY !!!
