“Perfect, perfect, perfect!!!!”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

I really can't say enough about this bed and breakfast. The location is perfect...a 10 minute walk from the Boston train, even with luggage. The house is in a lovely neighborhood, very close walk to everything. 2 mins to the park, 5 mins to the main pedestrian mall area, etc. We had the Captain's Quarters room. It was very spacious, almost like a suite, sans kitchen. We had a sitting area with a comfortable futon, coffee table and tv. A great bed with impeccable linens. Big closet. Windows that can be opened to let in a breeze. Large bathroom with vanity, shampoo, conditioner, soap, tissues, candles, etc. The breakfast was yummy! I loved the rhubarb scones (rhubarb straight from the garden!! ). A great selection of tea. Fruit, eggs, cereal, yogurt...you will not leave hungry. Flora is super nice and helpful. We especially loved her mother-in-law! What a cool lady. We loved this place and would go back in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: I think most of the rooms are upstairs except the Garden room. Ask Flora for more details if you can...

Green Features: This hotel was TOPS in environmentally friendly practices. In room recycling, compost, rain barrels, solar panels, house garden, they don't change your sheets and towels all the time. They WILL, happily, though.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review us! It was a pleasure to have you stay with us and so glad to hear that you found it convenient to the train and all the major attractions and shopping. Salem is especially great for walkers like you folks. But the trolley and taxis are also available.

We are also delighted that you enjoyed your room and the breakfast. Rhubarbs are a great early "fruit", but strawberries are now in season and then raspberries and blueberries are added to our fruit salads.

Thank you again for choosing the Northey Street House. Whole heartedly agree that Ann is a "cool lady"!

Shalom,
Flora

Located really close to the heart of Salem with plenty of restaurants and great shopping. Flora was great to work with and the room was even ready several hours earlier than check, which was great because we arrived early in the morning. Loved staying here!!

Flora was there to greet us at the agreed upon time. She let us check in early and was available via text should we have needed to make any changes or ask about directions. The house the clean and well stocked with essentials you would expect at any hotel/B&B. The location was great. Very walkable to the train/bus depot, tourist attractions, downtown Salem, restaurants and drug stores. Our friends had a later flight and we weren't going to be there to let them in and Flora was great about being available to let them in. Overall, very agreeable and laid back host, great location.

Room Tip: the captain room is the best.

Readers of this review need to be aware of the discrepancies between what so many positive reviews say and what the less favorable ones say. In my opinion you should read the negative ones (average/poor/terrible) first and consider the negative aspects mentioned by these folks, because they are so consistent from one review to the next. These reviews will probably give you a more accurate picture of this establishment than you will get from reading all the glowing comments in other reviews. Just saying...

We wish we had investigated more of the negative reviews, after the experiences we had with our stay. Our experience was so disappointing, and we really can't praise this place in any way other than to say it is a historic building and has a plaque so stating by the front (side) door. In fact as B&Bs go, this one was definitely SUBSTANDARD. We truly cannot understand the wealth of glowing reviews for this place! During our 2 week tour of New England, we stayed at 8 different B&Bs from Massachusetts to Maine, and staying in B&Bs is not a new experience for us, so we know what to expect. Our accommodations ranged from $100 to $150 per night as we were there a little bit ahead of the summer season, mid to late May, We experienced lots of variety in the places we stayed, and we did look for reasonable rates, but every place we stayed except for this one gave us an enjoyable experience. Our stay at Northey Street House B&B felt like we were staying in a house that just rented rooms, and rather tacky rooms at that. We were 2 couples traveling together and booked two rooms, based on the many, many 5 star ratings this establishment has on Tripadvisor, and based on the lovely pictures on their website, and they DO look nice. One couple stayed on the third floor, the other couple had a 1 bedroom efficiency "apartment" with it's own entry at ground level. Interesting that neither of our accommodations have pictures on their website! We were told that the apartment was a vacation rental, and did not have the same breakfast privileges as the regular B&B, but the impression given to us in no way led us to believe that these accommodations would be substandard. And the couple in the third floor room was not treated as B&B guests with access to common rooms and breakfast. When we booked our stay, no mention at all was made of several things that, had we known ahead of time, we would not have chosen to stay here. We began to be made aware of these things via emails from the owner after we had booked. #1 No shoes allowed inside. You were expected to remove your shoes upon entering, and wear slippers or go in your stocking feet to your room. Likewise coming down, you were expected to put your shoes on at the front door. #2 One of us was staying in a third floor room, and an email informed us that the only suitcase allowed up to the 3rd floor was of carry-on size. This was very inconvenient as we ended up having to repack suitcases into smaller ones to carry in for our 3 night stay. On a two week vacation a couple does not typically pack in carry-ons. #3 Very specific rules were sent to us about where and how to park, making us feel very uncomfortable about the apparent rigidity of the owner who seemed to regulate every aspect of your stay. Granted, parking is tight, but there are gracious ways to inform patrons. #4 After getting a rather rambling email narrating an experience the owner had with someone checking out very early morning and knocking on their door and waking them, and then going on to inform us that under no circumstances were we to knock and wake them early or late at night, we contemplated canceling our reservations, but by this time we would have had difficulty securing another place in such short time. Bad decision! These are our experiences from our stay at Northey:
• Being a little paranoid about not getting there too late and bothering our hosts we arrived about 6 p.m. We wanted to check in, get our keys, see the rooms, but not carry in luggage until later, so we could have a look around town. Flora, our "hostess" wanted to know why we had to see the rooms before bringing in our things, and insisted we had to bring in the luggage immediately. Her unbending attitude meant we lost time before dark. And I might add we were not made to feel particularly welcome.
• The carpet up the stairs was NOT clean. Even though we had to remove our shoes, and the painted wood floor at the edge of the carpet was not too clean either. Most B&Bs work ahead of the season to get carpets and deep cleaning done before guests start coming. Not done here!
• The third floor room was a mishmash of furniture. A couple of old pieces that could have been charming but weren't, a desk and bookcases that appeared to be Walmart quality or thrift store buys. Our room had a queen bed and twin mattress set resting ON THE FLOOR in one corner. The bed had an old, stiff, dingy, feather comforter on it that weighed a ton (exageration, but no one could sleep under that!) One of the bed quilts was frayed and had holes in it. The towels were dingy and stiff as though hung on a clothesline to dry. If they were indeed dried in a drier, either the stiffness was a result of soap not being totally rinsed out, or they were long overdue for replacement. One towel on the last morning was not completely dry after being washed.
• Something that really creeped us out was that the medicine cabinet held someone's toiletries: a partly used Vaseline jar, used contac lense solution among other things. A bookshelf (the kind you buy and put together yourself...laminate fiberboard, not what you'd expect in a B&B) in the bathroom held a rather large assortment of partially used men's and women's toiletries. The desk in the bedroom (thrift store quality) held junk typically found in a desk someone uses. We suspect our room was in regular use when not rented.
• The 3rd floor bathroom shower door had black mold that had established itself quite well on the inside. The bathroom had a rather sheer curtain and no privacy shade. With a building having windows next door we felt like someone could look right in and see us using the toilet or stepping in and out of the shower. We could see out, so we know others could see in.
• The general wall and room decor was just tacky. Piles of old magazines, and a mantle just piled full of stuff, no discernable color scheme or decorating theme in the room.
• The "apartment" had virtually every lamp or appliance in the place unplugged. You would have thought with "guests" expected, they would have plugged the lamps in ahead of arrival. The hand held shower head would not stay in the holder,
• The 3rd floor room did have a microwave provided, with various exotic teas, (but no plain black tea), and 4 packets of instant coffee, but no way to stir the coffee or tea during preparation. Used cups were not replaced, so we started washing the last 2 out ourselves to reuse.
• Guests were expected to sort their trash for recycling purposes which is admirable but rather presumptuous of them to ask guests to do so.
• When we checked in, there was an empty 2 quart milk or juice carton laying in the rocks by the front steps. When we left it was still there.
• Room ventilation consisted of opening the windows. We had to ask for a fan. 2 nights were fairly cool. One night was muggy. All nights were damp due to rain which made our rooms damp also. At no time were we told we had another option than to open windows. In fact when we were shown to our room, Flora's husband (we presume) whose name escapes me, opened the windows FOR us. Windows had dark out curtains under the sheer curtains since there was a lot of street light at night, but if you closed them, you didn't get any airflow. Highly unsatisfactory.
• We saw the owner exactly twice in our 3 night stay. Upon check-in, and once when my husband was trying to lock the front door as we left and she opened the door to see who was there. No friendliness, no interest in us, no offers of suggestions for activities, no inquiries about how we were enjoying our stay, Just instructions on where to leave our key upon leaving. When we left our final morning she was nowhere to be seen.

Room Tip: Don't let yourself be stuck in the third floor bedroom or the first floor apartment unless you j...

This is my third trip to the Northey Street B & B and everything was just wonderful. Flora, the Inn keeper has always been friendly with me and made every effort to make my trip a wonderful experience. Since a lot of the guests did not stay for breakfast, there were two mornings we ate together and just chatted away. My last morning I was not thrilled with the quiche and she made me some fresh scrambled eggs with green onions that hit the spot. She can also really bake as her ginger scones are the best! She is a very warm and friendly person and makes every effort to help her guests. Try to get the Captain's Room when you stay. It is the best location and right next to the breakfast room. It was a great stay and plan to stay here again on my next visit.

Room Tip: Try to get the Captain's Room

Flora made us feel comfortable and right at home. She was welcoming, and friendly. Her Fresh cooked breakfasts were delicious, and created by Flora herself. Our room was on the first floor level. The room was beautiful and clean. The B&B was a short walk to the center of the town. When you book a B&B, make sure they have on site parking, ours did. The train station was just a bit further. We took the train into Boston to meet some friends for dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay At the Northey Street House Bed and Breakfast. We would highly recommend this B&B if you visit Salem MA.

Flora was welcoming, helpful and friendly. Freshly cooked breakfasts were delicious, everything baked by Flora. Rooms varied, one room on the kitchen floor was beautiful and very convenient, the garden room was clean and fresh, a bit more basic but not disappointing, perhaps small for more than one person. Well located, about a ten minute walk to train or town. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend.

Room Tip: Not the garden room

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review of your stay. I'm so glad you all had an enjoyable stay. It was a pleasure to meet you folks and get to know you all a bit. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed our breakfasts and our accommodations. The Garden room is the smallest and the newest of our rooms, but is well thought out. I'm glad it met your needs. Hope our paths will cross again. Until then, I wish you all the best.
