The McNay is a beautiful art museum both inside and out. The outside sculpture pieces plus the waterfall are lovely. You often see a wedding party taking pictures there. The permanent collection is nice and now with the additional space you get travelling shows. I especially like the Tobin Theatre wing. My only complaint is their lack of any food or beverage service--you have to get into your car to get lunch or coffee.

One of the things I liked best about this museum was that the bulk of the exhibits were housed in the former mansion of the museum's benefactor, Marion Koogler McNay. In addition to being able to view the great art, you can also enjoy the architecture of what used to be the home of Marion Koogler McNay. In addition, the grounds are beautiful, sprinkled with fountains and sculptures. The outdoor patio/atrium areas are delightful. There is a very interesting video that explains McNay's role in the art world. My only disappointment was that McNay's art (she herself was an accomplished artist) was not on display, and is reserved for special events.

Not only is the museum itself a great place, but the grounds are also great for photos! Try to avoid Saturday mornings as they are the most popular time for these. The museum offers free admission on Thursday nights and the first Sunday of the month.

What can you say about a museum. It has art, you wander around and enjoy it, or not. More important, to me, is the setting and the atmosphere. That's where the McNay excels. The original building is a former private residence, with a lovely courtyard. It is not hard to imagine living there, even if it was before the time of air conditioning. I like wandering through the small rooms. It has a cozy and personal feeling. Yes, they built a large addition to house more exhibits and to have a spacious entry foyer. But I like the original building. That's why I visit.

As San Antonio is a small town it has an amazing art museum, lovingly attended to by those who love the old home in which the are is housed and the art objects themselves. A nice variety of many forms of art, something for everyone and at every interest level.
