I travel a lot for work, and I was attracted to this motel for a March 2014 trip because of its price. The hotel didn't appear to be anything fancy and perhaps a little on the dingy side. The first night of my stay, however, I was largely satisfied, despite having to sleep through a lot of noise from the highway out front. If you are not a heavy sleeper (I am), you will most certainly want to request a room at the back of the motel. As I mentioned, I am a heavy sleeper, and even I had extreme difficulty sleeping through the noise.
The second day of my stay, I woke up with a row of itchy bumps on my arm, and I soon noticed bumps elsewhere on my upper body. The pattern seemed to be indicative of bed bug bites, so I did a quick search of my mattress, and I found a pornographic magazine tucked between the mattress and the box spring. It was very close to the edge of the box spring, and it seemed to be in a place where it should have been noticed by the housekeeping staff when the sheets were changed.
I contacted the manager, and he kindly moved me to a different room (this time at the back of the motel). I stayed one more night, although I would have switched hotels if I were staying longer. On the third morning of my stay, I woke up with more bites on my arms, which I showed to the manager and other staff at the motel. Before leaving, I asked about the possibility for a discount on my room (I've been offered discounts -- without ever having to ask for them, I might add -- on other hotel stays for less egregious issues), and I was told by the manager that he was sure something could be worked out.
So began a two-month game of phone tag. Shortly after my return home (where I took every precaution not to spread bedbugs to my home and have seen no bites on my body since), I was told by management that Orkin had come in to inspect the room and found no signs of bedbugs. Therefore, I would receive no discount at all on my stay. I escalated the complaint to corporate headquarters, where it was passed back to the owner of the location where I had stayed. I left multiple messages for the owner over the course of two months. Not one was returned.
About a month and a half after my stay, I finally received a copy of the Orkin inspection report. I had put in numerous calls both to corporate and to the motel to request a copy and was denied at every turn. So, for a very long time I was being denied a discount on my room while the motel withheld any evidence that would support that denial. In the meantime, with no evidence that my luggage was NOT infested with bedbugs and with no reliable way to clean my bags, I was forced to discard those items -- a loss of about $200 for me.
In all this time, the owner of this location returned not one of my calls. I'm asking for very minimal compensation here, certainly nothing extreme and certainly nothing that would put this man out of business. During my many conversations with staff, I sensed that this is a pattern with the owner, so if you value your peace of mind, find another hotel to stay in.
This was hands down the worst travel experience I've ever had.
