“"Cool Hotel in Hot San Antonio"”
Reviewed 21 June 2012

We have visited San Antonio many times as it is not that far from where we live. For our anniversary we decided to try something different and stayed at the Hotel Havana. Our daughter and her husband have stayed there several times and recommended it. What a great place! They have renovated this lovely old building with charming hardwood floors and furnished it with antiques, retro fridg, and unique accessories. We had a King Suite on the first floor and it was very quiet. HHl is away from the busy hussle and bussle of the main river walk which was a nice change. On the night we arrived we took a stroll along the new river walk area close to the hotel. It was not crowded and the landscaping was beautiful. The hotel has several verandas for visiting or sharing a meal or drink. The OCHO lounge was a great place for dinner and wonderful breakfasts! We dined inside for the hot evenings and had breakfast on the patio in the mornings when cooler. All the food we had was excellent. Highly recommend the churros! Only con was the parking area was small and tight if you have a larger vehical.

Having just returned from a wonderful week long trip to the sunshine state of Texas and in particular San Antonio I felt compelled to highlight a lovely boutique hotel called The Havana....this should be a priority for anyone wishing to experience the delights of a break from the norm of the main chains and the staff provide not only a warm hospitable welcome but also look forward to making your stay as enjoyable as possible...also worth popping round the corner to OCHO to sample the delights of a light breakfast snack, an extensive lunch menu or just to sit and relax alongside the River.....special note of thanks to Alex, Sandra and John who all made my stay that little bit extra special....looking forward to seeing you all in 3 - 4 months

Hotel Havana is everything I've ever thought an historic hotel should be. They strike a perfect balance between vintage and modern. The lobby is sparcely decorated with antique furniture that has been upholstered in modern fabrics. There are beautiful hardwood floors and area rugs throughout. We stayed on the 2nd floor in a queen suite and there were 2 different common area verandas to choose from. One is at the back of the hotel and the other at the front, right outside of our room. We were supposed to meet some friends from San Antonio while we were there, and ended up just having them over to the hotel where we sat on the veranda and had drinks and talked the entire evening.

The room was very hip and furnished with antiques and a vintage style fridge. The high ceilings and vintage details make you feel like you've stepped back into the 1930's. The bed was unbelievable. The wifi was easy to connect and very fast.

The only "cons"? 1. A coffee maker in the room would've been nice. 2. We ordered a very expensive breakfast from room service that ended up being very mediocre. 3. When I came down the elevator at one point, a member of the maintenance staff appeared to be taking a nap (was lying down) on the bench at the base of the staircase.

All-in-all, they have done an unbelievable job with this hotel. Everything is very tastefully decorated and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

We visit San Antonio often and have tried many hotels along the River, but we have become loyal fans of HH. It's like walking back in time, a romantic, stylish and gracious experience. Maria and the rest of the front desk staff are super friendly and accommodating; they take real pride in their hotel. Their Ocho Restaurant is our favorite place to sit alongside the River and have a cocktail, then some food that's good enough to put this restaurant in the "destination" category. Never again will we accept the anonymity and crowds of those big hotels along the River. No matter how many times we returned, they always asked us, "Have you stayed with us before?" At HH, they will greet you by name when you return. Lovely people.

Room Tip: Hotel faces a bus route, so ask for a quiet room (usually toward the back on 2nd floor).

This is a hidden gem amongst the cookie cutter brand hotels along the riverwalk. The rooms transport you back to time where hotels were more personal and focused on excellent service. The adjacent restaurant, Ocho is superb with great handcrafted drinks and a perfect view. Another bonus is the hotel is pet friendly and was very accommodating to our black lab. Overall the hotel was spotless, beautiful, and had outstanding service. We will be back.

I haven't been to Cuba but if Havana is a representation of it, we've been missing out. It has the feel you would expect if you've ever Hotel San Jose in Austin - makes you feel like you are in a romantic, one of a kind place. First, it's not an "upscale" hotel. Vintage and originality will always rule over high end amenities and finishes as it should. It feels like you could have stayed there back in the 1950's and it wouldn't have changed much, but this is a positive thing I think. We only had one night in San Antonio and we were very pleased to get quality service right away also. Relatively, it was probably a bit pricey for the small room we booked, but expected due to it being Memorial Day weekend and booking last minute. We reviewed all these cool rooms on the website but only a studio room was available, which ended up perfectly quaint since we were only there one night. It definitely had a European feel if you know what I mean. Doors/Windows opened from the ceiling and you get a great view of downtown SA. We also pre-added parking and a breakfast in bed for two from Ocho. Breakfast was great, but didn't try for dinner or anything else. The drinks are solid and bartenders were nice. I asked for matches and pretty sure someone went to a close-by store and got some for me. It has Hoegaarden and various other good selections of beer, so they obviously know what they are doing, and they also have a long good selection of tasty drinks. It has a great dark underground bar, and Ocho is great with one of best designs I've seen in a while. It reminded me of some old times in Mexico mixed with Amsterdam. If this place added a pool, game over, it would be top hotel in Texas. Basically, just find a good weekend where you can get a deal and stay there. It's in an amazing location downtown near all the bars and loud stuff but tucked into a quiet, chill area. Staff was genuinely nice and helpful and all the other guests seemed really happy that they also were staying there.

Room Tip: Book ahead.

My husband and I wanted a quick getaway on the River Walk and had read about Ocho, the restaurant, in Texas Monthly. We drove from Austin just to stay there and had a wonderful time. The restaurant and bar were so great we didn't end up leaving the hotel to visit the River Walk. A beautiful, vintage hotel with a wonderful staff, especially Maria, who took very good care of us.

Room Tip: The studio room was a little too small
