We were stay at the Menger Hotel for 3 nights & were looking forward to enjoying the famous Bar. It is great. Has an nice friendly feel, lots of history and a good vibe. With dark wood & a very neat back bar, it's one of those great bars. We started each evening there before going to dinner. Second night bartender remembered our name and ask if we wanted the same drinks. Hope to return soon.

Great old fashion and manhattan drinks right next to the Alamo. Great atmosphere. Love the classic bar feel. One more shot of bourbon and I would have joined Teddy's rough riders.

Small, dark watering hole with old world wood furnishings. Great history, and a handful of interesting period artifacts. Beers are reasonable. Park near the Alamo and pay once (around $10) then you can hit Alamo, Menger Bar, Riverwalk and a bit further walk is El Mercado.

If you want an extra special dose of history in addition to the Alamo, spend some time at the historic Menger Hotel. Over a 100 years old and beautifully restored, you can spend time enjoying original artifacts and photographs of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. They stayed here for recruiting and training purposes. The Menger Bar is the highlight, with its original bar, lighting, short ceilings, and original photos. You can sit and clearly imagine the many different conversations that were had and plans that were made in that place. If you're lucky, you might be there when Teddy Roosevelt himself is telling stories !

We stopped in here after looking at the Alamo. It's right across the street. It's in a beautiful old hotel with lots of history. The bartenders were very sweet and gave us lots of info on what to do while we were in San Antonio. They have a great selection of beers. Try one from a local Texas brewery. Everything I tried was delicious. We did not eat anything but they offered us a menu as they must serve food.
