“Not worth the drive”
Reviewed 17 July 2011

Artisan's Alley is supposed to be a cute collection of boutiques and restaurants clustered in a quirky old-school setting. Instead, we found it be a collection of abandoned or closed businesses on the Sunday we visited. I'd estimate more than a third of the shops are empty with paper over the windows, and on Sundays another third are closed. (It is a personal gripe when retailers and restaurants are closed on one of the two days a week that 80% of us don't work.)

My wife and I entered perhaps four shops and spent less than 45 minutes covering the entire Artisan's Alley experience. The most interesting shop is Back Alley Antiques, a quirky antique store with some interesting items for sale. One of the other stores was a home design place so fussy and florid that Marie Antoinette must shop there. And another shop was a chain store of the type you'd find in malls anywhere.

If this were located downtown or in nearby neighborhoods such as King William or Alamo Heights, it may be worth checking out during the week when more is open, but given it is located 13 miles outside of the center of downtown and is not nearby any other attractions, I can't recommend Artisan's Alley to visitors to San Antonio.
