We arrived at Omni's Mokara Hotel and Spa in the evening of Sat. July 26th. We were excited to be staying on the River Walk and to be able to treat relatives who were flying in from Switzerland to dinner there. High school friends joined us by renting a room at this same hotel upon my recommendation. Other lifelong friends drove in from surrounding areas to eat with us at this hotel's restaurant: Ostra. Altogether, there were 9 of us sharing multiple meals. We went to the sister Omni hotel across the river to have the best classic margarita rocks at Las Canarias restaurant. It's great to be able to drink and NOT have to drive. But be careful NOT to fall into the river due to the huge Sat. night crowds. If you fall in, don't worry: it's only four ft. deep, so just stand up. It was 103 degrees outside every day we were there, but the hotel was cool and comfortable. On the web, the brown, beige, and gold decor looks somewhat dreary, but when you've come in from under a blazing sun, it's WONDERFULLY inviting! With one exception, valet and front desk personnel all called us by name and made us feel very welcome. Juan was exceptionally welcoming and we appreciated him! A tiny Hispanic cleaning lady was adorable and helped us by getting us more bottled water. Our first room had two beds as requested and was larger than shown on the web, possibly because it was a corner room. The bathroom was huge with a jacuzzi, glass-door shower, and separate commode area with a door. Everything worked well. Now for the problems: (1) NO adjoining-room guarantee (2) Traffic noise until one a.m. Sat. (3) Garbage truck noise at 5:30 a.m. every morning (4) Cooking bacon smells at 5:30 a.m. wafting up to our 4th floor room every morning! (5) Mini-bar already missing a drink upon opening it for the first time! Details: we wanted TWO adjoining rooms, so that my husband and I could be together when awake but could shut the doors to his snoring when asleep. The tall red-haired front-desk woman who greeted us when we arrived told us she was the one who informed me on the phone of company policy: "We can NOT guarantee adjoining rooms in writing to you by email, period. All we can do is request it and you can see what happens when you get here!" She was arrogant on the phone, saying Mokara is a four-diamond hotel. Well, The Broadmoor in CO Springs is higher-rated at FIVE diamonds and it GUARANTEES adjoining rooms in writing! Upon arrival, this same tall red-haired woman seemed HAPPY to tell me that SHE was the one who denied us the adjoining-room guarantee and she was really OVERJOYED to tell us that the hotel was sold-out THAT night, so we could NOT have an adjoining room after all. We slept OK together the first night, so didn't ask for the adjoining room the second night, despite its being vacant. However, by the third night, I was sleep-deprived enough to request the adjoining room and it was "granted." Management, take a lesson: you LOST $400+ by NOT guaranteeing us adjoining rooms for ALL 3 nights! Other problems were motorcycle noise until one a.m. Sat. and garbage truck banging at 5:30 a.m. every morning, allowing us a whole four and a half hours sleep the first night! Bacon smells wafting up to our fourth floor room at 5:30 a.m. were NOT welcome after only four hours sleep! Front desk made a note that the mini-bar was missing a drink upon our arrival. In the future, if I HAD to stay on the River Walk, I'd probably stay here, BUT I would rather try to stay at a resort in the hill country and experience LESS noise. Seeing relatives and friends was the main reason we came, hoping to share fun times with them on the River, which we did for the most part. If there were a GUARANTEE of two ADJOINING rooms, we might stay here again. We didn't have time to try the spa but did tour it.
