“Policy, Noise + Hard Bed Prevent Highest Rate”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

We arrived at Omni's Mokara Hotel and Spa in the evening of Sat. July 26th. We were excited to be staying on the River Walk and to be able to treat relatives who were flying in from Switzerland to dinner there. High school friends joined us by renting a room at this same hotel upon my recommendation. Other lifelong friends drove in from surrounding areas to eat with us at this hotel's restaurant: Ostra. Altogether, there were 9 of us sharing multiple meals. We went to the sister Omni hotel across the river to have the best classic margarita rocks at Las Canarias restaurant. It's great to be able to drink and NOT have to drive. But be careful NOT to fall into the river due to the huge Sat. night crowds. If you fall in, don't worry: it's only four ft. deep, so just stand up. It was 103 degrees outside every day we were there, but the hotel was cool and comfortable. On the web, the brown, beige, and gold decor looks somewhat dreary, but when you've come in from under a blazing sun, it's WONDERFULLY inviting! With one exception, valet and front desk personnel all called us by name and made us feel very welcome. Juan was exceptionally welcoming and we appreciated him! A tiny Hispanic cleaning lady was adorable and helped us by getting us more bottled water. Our first room had two beds as requested and was larger than shown on the web, possibly because it was a corner room. The bathroom was huge with a jacuzzi, glass-door shower, and separate commode area with a door. Everything worked well. Now for the problems: (1) NO adjoining-room guarantee (2) Traffic noise until one a.m. Sat. (3) Garbage truck noise at 5:30 a.m. every morning (4) Cooking bacon smells at 5:30 a.m. wafting up to our 4th floor room every morning! (5) Mini-bar already missing a drink upon opening it for the first time! Details: we wanted TWO adjoining rooms, so that my husband and I could be together when awake but could shut the doors to his snoring when asleep. The tall red-haired front-desk woman who greeted us when we arrived told us she was the one who informed me on the phone of company policy: "We can NOT guarantee adjoining rooms in writing to you by email, period. All we can do is request it and you can see what happens when you get here!" She was arrogant on the phone, saying Mokara is a four-diamond hotel. Well, The Broadmoor in CO Springs is higher-rated at FIVE diamonds and it GUARANTEES adjoining rooms in writing! Upon arrival, this same tall red-haired woman seemed HAPPY to tell me that SHE was the one who denied us the adjoining-room guarantee and she was really OVERJOYED to tell us that the hotel was sold-out THAT night, so we could NOT have an adjoining room after all. We slept OK together the first night, so didn't ask for the adjoining room the second night, despite its being vacant. However, by the third night, I was sleep-deprived enough to request the adjoining room and it was "granted." Management, take a lesson: you LOST $400+ by NOT guaranteeing us adjoining rooms for ALL 3 nights! Other problems were motorcycle noise until one a.m. Sat. and garbage truck banging at 5:30 a.m. every morning, allowing us a whole four and a half hours sleep the first night! Bacon smells wafting up to our fourth floor room at 5:30 a.m. were NOT welcome after only four hours sleep! Front desk made a note that the mini-bar was missing a drink upon our arrival. In the future, if I HAD to stay on the River Walk, I'd probably stay here, BUT I would rather try to stay at a resort in the hill country and experience LESS noise. Seeing relatives and friends was the main reason we came, hoping to share fun times with them on the River, which we did for the most part. If there were a GUARANTEE of two ADJOINING rooms, we might stay here again. We didn't have time to try the spa but did tour it.

Room Tip: Heard the river view is too noisy. With two beds, there is ONLY the street "view," but it...

Dear Trish D,

Thank you for your review and for sharing the many positive highlights of your stay with us and thank you for recognizing our team as they take great pride in their work on a daily basis. You are right; Juan does a great job and always enjoys welcoming our guests back to Mokara. I have also shared your admiration for our housekeeping department with the housekeeper whom serviced your room during your stay with us. We do have a variety of guest room configurations at the property and I have shared with our team the concerns regarding the connecting room request and related items. I assure you that these are not typical of our property as we continue our relentless training and pursuit of excellence.

Again, thank you for your review and if I may be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact me directly at 212-396-5800.

All the best,

Josh DeBottis

Hotel is lovely and service is very good. Simply not worth $500, especially when you have a view of the parking lot and fire escape. Concierge (Petra) was outstanding in helping arrange reservations and special treats. Hotel lobby is lovely and service is outstanding, the room is simply to pricey.

My hotel experience was one of the best ever. I was treated like royalty and I will continue to recommend this hotel always. I will also like to do a holiday stay-cation at The Mokora Hotels Spas in SA

It is easy to see why this is rated the best hotel in the city. The concierge Petra anticipated our needs expertly. Everyone was very friendly including those who clean rooms. We never had an employee pass us in the halls without them giving us a very real smile. Up until a few months ago I was working at a convenience store so we are not super wealthy people but they sure made us feel as if we were. From the room upgrade to a suite they made us feel like royalty. I cannot wait to stay again.

We wanted 5-star hotel in San Antonio, and could only find 4-star options. We booked the Mokara and were glad we did. It was impeccable - the staff was great, the accommodations wonderful. The Mokara easily surpassed some Ritz Carltons we've stayed at in the past. Be sure to visit the spa.

This is the best place I have ever stayed at in San Antonio. I make 4-6 trips a year to the city and always stay around the river... decided to try this Hotel. The service, rooms, staff, restaurant and bar are incredible. I will be staying here every time I go to San Antonio from now on.

This is an outstanding hotel. The staff in particular are cheerful and courteous and showed an interest in our reason for travel (a drum corps competition at the Alamodome, who doesn't want to talk about their kid?) The room was well-appointed and very comfortable. I particularly appreciated the no-party policy, having stayed previously at a hotel that was filled to the brim with young adults who stayed up late in the lobby and were noisy in the hallways. Definitely will return to the Mokara when we return to San Antonio.

Room Tip: Room 681 faces a brick wall and air conditioner units. Poor view but otherwise the room was enjoyabl...
