The marketplace is a half an hour walk from the riverwalk in the city center. Its a fun, vibrant place to do some shopping, strolling and enjoy the street artists. I also recommend to eat at the Mexican Restaurant there Mi Tierra, its something different.

Designed to have the feel of a little piece of Mexico, the market is a unique part of San Antonio. Many souvenir shops line the market, so if you are wanting to go to one place to do your touristy shopping, this would probably be the place.

However, you cannot escape the touristy feel even though I know locals will come here. There are a number of places to dine, most notably, Mi Tierra Cafe.

Easily walkable from the Riverwalk area of downtown if you don't have a car, but a car is recommended if you go late in the evening.

I don't know if the atmosphere is different at the weekends, but when we went mid-week, it was fairly quiet. We were disappointed with the shops, having hoped to buy some arts and crafts gifts. The items for sale in the shops looked quite tacky and none of us were tempted to buy anything. There were quite a few signs up requesting visitors not to take any photos of themselves trying on goods etc, which were understandable, but a little off putting. I wish we had read the TA reviews first and realised it was more of a flea market than street market, then we would have been better prepared for what we found.

Would not recommend I'm afraid.

Totally enjoyed walking around the EL Mercado market. the vendor food was better than the Mexican food we had at a restaurant on the River Walk and the bands were very enjoyable to sit and listen to. You could buy a COLD 16 oz domestic can of beer and enjoy it will walking around and visiting the outdoor merchants. There were many "touristy" items but also some unique hand crafted gifts. We were there on a Saturday and their was a mix of tourist and locals. We definately will return to this market on our next visit to San Antonio.

Some reviews of El Mercado imply that it is strictly a tourist attraction. Most certainly there will be tourist present, but on a busy weekend there will probably be more local folks present than tourist. On a busy weekend several bands, or other musical groups will be performing. Some times as many as three or four local groups will be performing on different stages in the Market. The entertainment is free and the locals come to El Mercado to be entertained. Most of the time the tourist will be inside the restaurants and bars while the locals will be outside purchasing food and beverage from the "Chile Queens". This attraction is not like the River Walk, the River Walk is almost entirely tourist; and El Mercado is a mix of tourist and locals. I visited in May of 2014 and during Fiesta in 2013.
