So there is probably better Tex Mex to have in San Antonio ( I know there is) but La Fogata ,along with La Fonda on Main, has one of the best patio dining scenes in the city and generally good, solid Tex Mex. The building is large with various dining rooms but the patio is where you want to be. The patio is very festive with lush vegetation, live oak trees, lights, and fountains. In colder months there is a fire pit and heaters that are sat up. The whole atmosphere is charming and this is one of the main reasons for dining here.
The service is friendly and brisk depending on how busy they are. I have dined here 3 or 4 times and never had bad service but varying degrees of good service.
The margaritas are terrific and have a great freshness to them....some of the best I've ever had and each comes with an edible orchid in a 16 ounce glass..not the usual 12 ounce. La Fogata has also won the San Antonio Maragrita Pour Off many years in a row.
A stated above the food is reliably good, generally Tex Mex with some more authentic Mexican thrown in. I've dined here 3 or 4 times and have had many items and shared many others. My last visit I had their Cheese Enchiladas (yes I know a very basic dish) and they are very good...stuffed with REAL cheese and covered in a light, tasty gravy. My partner had the Cheese Chile Relleno and substituted grilled veggies for the refried beans. The relleno had a different batter on it than what we are used to but it was good but not great. Strangely enough the grilled veggies on the side were amazingly good and grilled to perfection.
Most everything here is very good to good and the experience and atmosphere has never been a disppontment. Come here as a couple, a family, or a large party of friends and enjoy the margaritas, food, and atmosphere in a great setting.
