On my last visit to San Antonio I read a review of Adelante by the San Antonio Express News. The reviewer noted that the place had a loyal following but said that the food was not true Mexican food. This is entirely correct and also is the point of my review. Adelante is not traditional Mexican food. It is vegetarian food, inspired by Mexican cuisine, in a style unique to Adelante. A good example of this are the tortillas which remind me less of traditional tortillas and more of Ethiopian injera, but which are fresh, light, and delicious. My favorite entree is the vegetable enchiladas which are not typical enchiladas with vegetables added but a unique, nourishing combination of beans, corn, peppers, and cheese with Mexican inspired spicing.
If you are not a complete vegetarian most of Adelante's items are available with chicken. But whatever your choice Adelante offers a special take on fresh, light food. A San Antonio original which is not to be missed.
