We have always seen the old S.A.F.D. Station downtown, but noticed this trip it's now opened as a Fire Museum! This recently opened non-profit museum (former fire station and 2 minute walk from the Alamo) is dedicated to the history of the San Antonio F.D. The volunteers that work there are mostly retired FF's, and are full of great stories and explain the history of how FireFighting and its equipment has changed over the past century. Im a current full time Fire Fighter / Paramedic in Corpus Christi and my wife and kids loved the museum. They even have a gift shop. When you visit, please donate. They are a non-profit organization and run on donations.

The San Antonio Fire Museum is small gem in a big city. We were very impressed with the quality of their displays. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. Shows good examples of the equipment used in firefighting in the early years. Also pictures and articles about the firefighters. Nice "hands on" display for children. Very conveniently located just behind the Alamo.

Great place to visit, historic building, fire trucks & gear. Men and women worked/lived at this station for many years, some gave their life to save others. Museum staffed by real firefighters.
Too bad the walls can't talk !

My husband and I visit San Antonio a few times a year for the Riverwalk attractions and delicious food but we were pleasantly surprised to see that they had turned their old Central Fire Station into a Museum. Every exhibit had a story and there were very knowledgeable volunteers everywhere you looked ready with a cool story about the station or a personal story from their 20+ year career there, Absolutely loved it and we will definitely go back... also can't beat the admission price. Had we known it was free for Firefighters in uniform, my husband would have worn his!

Not only are the old trucks and photos great to look at. The staff of volunteers are awesome. They have alot of personal knowledge about the Fire Department, as most are retirees. And boy do they have stories to share. KIds will love getting on the truck and ringing the bell, as well as putting on a helmet and playing firemen. A must see.
