“Another place this local will avoid”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2014

Why the average rating? Well, because this seems to be on par for the course of old people diner food in Texas....but be warned that doesn't mean it's necessarily good. We went as a double date for Friday night dinner after seeing it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives....starting to think Guy either has no taste buds, has slim pickings for places to feature, and/or network forced him to pick this place. I had the chicken fried steak, which was HUGE, but mostly tasteless. Very bland. Gravy was bland. Side salad was sad. Steak fries were ok. My husband had the oysters and said the same thing I did about my dinner; very bland. The other couple had the oysters and a BLT, again stated as being bland and unremarkable. Decor was sad. Staff was friendly and prompt. The place was busy, lots of people in and out the whole time we were there. The food reminded me of the Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls, but BBC uses somewhat more seasoning than Tip Top Cafe, though not by much. We will not be going back to TTC, nor would we recommend it to others as a place to seek out unless you're looking for giant portions of bland food.

“Worst hamburger ever!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2014

When going to a restaurant known for a few specific things, like their chicken fried steak, or onion rings, we should know not to try something else, I guess. We wanted a hamburger and were planning to go to Babe's on Fredericksburg. They were so crowded that we decided to go down the road to Tip Top. I don't know what kind of meat they use, but it had no flavor at all. It was the worst hamburger we have ever had. Never again! The chicken fried steak is great!

“Like a small town diner from the 50s”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2014

Had to try this and it was ok. Old, small town diner that stays busy. It appeared the most popular item on the menu was the stack of onion rings a lot of people ordered. I ordered the special which was grilled tilapia for $9.95. It came with a choice of 2 veggies. It was a nice size filet with good taste, a scoop of mashed potatoes and a bun. It was good but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

“Apathy towards customers”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2014

Perhaps this restaurant was performing at it's best when Guy Ferrari was visiting, but the staff is lacking in enthusiam & courtesy towards their customers. Our waitress (Cruz) did not tell us we had an option with the preparation of the potatoes. We waited almost 25 minutes for our
lunch, once it was served, we didn't see her again until we received our tab. Their menu is not health conscious. Their ice-box pies are the best thing going for them, but they are not available until after 2 p.m. They are not very friendly there, I don't think we will be going there again.
