I'm usually a big fan of the Hyatt chain. This one, not so much.
Yes, it's a fine hotel .... impressive lobby, modern architecture, new furnishings throughout the building, a reasonably fresh feel everywhere. Housekeeping does an excellent job. The rest of the staff is fine, though unexceptional. There is nothing BAD about it.
But flying the flag of "Grand Hyatt" should carry much more than this place delivers on. I've been more impressed by lower-price-point Hyatt Places in the past; simply put, there's just no "Grand" in the service or the facilities.
Rooms are small and blah. I can't tell you the square footage, and maybe it's just a function of the furnishing they've purchased ... but a standard room seems cramped. At a Grand, I'm looking for a little something extra ... here, it's a little something less.
Most of the concern here is about the price and brand; this place positions itself as being the upper side of the 4-star level. This would be a marvelous Radisson, and is a shade nicer than a standard Sheraton - but but where are little extras and nice surprises that you expect from Grand Hyatt? Nowhere to be seen on floor 18, that's for sure.
By comparison, I stayed at the Hyatt Regency in this city previously and loved it. Attentive staff everywhere, fabulous rooftop hot tub and deck, brilliant connection from the riverwalk to the hotel. The Regency's pool is way too small, but the theme and mood of the deck area is awesome.
Meanwhile, the Grand Hyatt comes off as just a vertical slab -- it's a convention hotel, and man does it feel like one. No personality, no lagniappe, no flourishes that make you say "THIS is what I'm paying these rates for. Cool."
The gym is well equipped, modern and ultra clean. The pool area, though, is a major letdown. It seems as if the designers and owners agreed on a "what's the least possible we can do" approach, and built that. The hotel management has done nothing to improve on the original plan.
The pool itself is smallish and uninspired; set in the middle of a hot, charmless concrete plaza on floor 5. No hot tub - that's just inexcusable in a hotel of this size and brand. No steam room. A clean but spartan changing area. There are literally acres of adjoining rooftop space, yet the Grand's pool deck is a small area (for a hotel with this many rooms) and deck chairs are hard to find on any nice day. Inexcusable.
Again, not a BAD hotel. But given a choice between the Marriott, the Hyatt Regency and here, I wouldn't hesitate a moment to choose either of the others.

I stayed here on a business trip and it was about as nice of a hotel as you can ask for. Great room service, close to attractions and restaurants, and terrific customer service. You can't go wrong staying here!

Room Tip: They are all nice.

Grand Hyatt is modern, clean and within walking distance to all Riverwalk attractions. Convention Center next to Hotel. Rooms were adequate, comfortable and clean. Fitness Center was awesome and Pool was nice but small and narrow but good for early morning lap swimming. Valet Parking pricey but there is a self park lot across from Hotel which could be a more affordable option. WiFi was not free but did not really need because we were busy. This Hotel is pet friendly because I saw a group with dogs. They also offer special rooms that are Hypo-Allergenic Rooms for people with allergies. Ask for a room facing the Riverwalk for a scenic view. Staff always helpful and Check In and Check Out was quick and easy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Riverwalk for a nice view

Overall happy with this hotel. The location is great. The actual room a little on the small size and surprised that it offered only two small drawers - perhaps to allow room for a small refridgerator and safe The bathroom had little hanging space for the towels and the toiletries were not replenished even when used. There are two sets of elevators, one set for the lower 19 floors and one for the main lower floor and 20 - 24. This made getting to and from the lobby fast. A shout out goes to the cafe which served well made hot drinks and the restaurant downstairs where the chefs were both pleasant and helpful. Would stay here again.

Don't get confused with so many Hyatts in the downtown area. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt, 600 E. Market Street, Room 1805. (The Hyatt Regency is located on the Riverwalk, in the middle of most of the action. The Hyatt Place is a few blocks away from the Riverwalk, but still in the downtown area.) The Grand Hyatt is located next to the Convention Center. Since the Riverwalk wiggles through the downtown area, technically, it is on the Riverwalk but a few blocks from all the action (riverwalk bars, restaurants, shops). Still, its in a great location. Prime location if you ask me. Denny's is one block away (always full); The Alamo is about 2 1/2 blocks away. The Alamo is the center of downtown (touristly speaking). T

THE GOOD:

The hotel lobby at the Grand Hyatt is great. Elegant, big, staff is wonderful and their bar is also rather cool. I didn't eat at their restaruant. Of course, everything is a little pricy...afterall, elegance isn't cheap.

I got a great price on priceline.com, so I thought. I did that "name your own price" option, selected to pay $100 per night for a 4 star hotel and the Grand Hyatt accepted my bid. I am not sure what the average night price is but it seems that about $100 may be what a standard room goes for. Still, location was fine, hotel is clean, rooms smell great, and service is class A. The lobby is a little loud because it's so busy but once you go up to your room, it's really nice and quiet.

THE BAD:

Staying at the Grand Hyatt, i expected a bigger than standard room. Nope. The rooms were actually small. Very clean, but small. It was okay with me since I only would sleep there. The GREAT bed made up for the small room. These beds are by far the best in terms of comfort. (So are the beds at the Omni in Corpus Christi). Still, I would stay here again.

The other downer was parking. You can valet for $33 a day or park your own car at $26 a day. Rather pricy, but I did the valet...just worked out better for me. There is a public parking lot across the street. You can park there for $9 a day.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

This hotel is in a great location. But because it is and because it's on a corner, there is a lot of traffic and somethings challenging going in and out of the hotel. Not too bad but if you think you can go in and go right out, that ain't going to happen.

Hope this helps. I would stay at this hotel at that price, especially in the downtown area, anyday!

I was not aware that this hotel was right in the middle of everything. It sits right on the Riverwalk, Is across the street from the mall. (Yippee!!) and is a very short walk to the Alamo. The mall has an IMAX theater (if you prefer to catch a movie while in town). Every Riverwalk restaurant is in walking distance.

Once valet parked my car, I never retrieved it until I checked out. The hotel lounge, Bar Rojo, is a perfect place for a Happy Hour drink or a nighcap. They have fresh, made to order Sushi as well.

The restaurant Achiote River Cafe has EXCELLENT food. Definitely worth trying. I recommend the Miso Salmon. I also reco'mmend dining there (along the Riverwalk banks) at night after the sun sets. It's beautiful.

This is the newest hotel in San Antonio and it shows. I would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: There are rooms that overlook the city and rooms that overlook the Riverwalk. It is your preference...

I agree with earlier reviewers that the staff was great and the location is good, especially if you are looking for a peaceful spot on the river or are attending a conference. However, the room was just okay, and when we checked in we found items still left in the refrigerator from a previous guest, which of course made us wonder if the room was really clean. Gross! The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable. We had Easter brunch (expensive) in the restaurant downstairs and the food was good (other than the prime rib which was almost inedible), the outside patio was beautiful and the live music was great, however it wasn't decorated for Easter other than the dessert table which had a modern looking artsy chocolate rabbit and egg sculpture all in shades of brown, which is not my idea of Easter! I have to say the desserts were awesome! Homemade marshmallows, Mexican hot chocolate, hot crossed buns, cakes, and cookies which were all delicious! Not the usual desserts at a buffet that look better than they taste. Kudos to the person in charge of that!

All in all, I am left with mixed feelings, but we probably wouldn't stay here again.
