“Wonderful Family Getaway!!!”
Reviewed 21 August 2007

This hotel was absolutely wonderful. The hotel was great for our family (including a 4yr old and 2yr old). The hotel does an awesome job of organizing daily activities for everyone to enjoy. During our stay, we made smores around a firepit everynight, our 4yr old rode a horse, we all rode on a horse-drawn wagon, watched movies out on the lawn and ate popcorn everynight and spent most of our days in the lazyriver or pools. The best part was all these activities were free!! We booked the "Great Family Deal" through the hotel's website and this gives you a one-time $25 activity credit, daily $35 meal credit (except arrival day), and free valet parking. The only time I would suggest eating in one of the restaurants is for breakfast. The Springhill Cafe has a buffet every morning and kids under age 4 are free. Even the kids milk or juices are free from the buffet. Adult buffet is $18/pp. There is a nice assortment of pastries, fruits, made to order omelettes, waffles and pancakes. We ate dinner at the hotel one night and it was just too expensive for two kids who barely touched their plates and two parents who shared a meal (over $50). I suggest bringing some drinks and snack foods to keep in the room since there is a refrigerator. There is a McDonalds about 5 minutes away, which is convenient. We picked up a meal there one night and brought it back to the hotel and ate out by the pool. The hotel is very centrally located...about 5 minutes from SeaWorld which was great. We will definitely go back.

  • Liked — The beds are comfortable and each room probably has 4-8 pillows.
  • Disliked — Not much of a view except the treetops.

Beautiful hotel with lot's to do. The Hyatt Hill country resort has alittle bit for everyone. It's has a golf course, spa, hike/bike trails with free bikes to rent out, numerous wonderful pools, lazy river (can you say HEAVEN!), man made beach area, playground, movies on the lawn in the summer along with smores, and hayrides. In the afternoons they even had cookies and lemondade in the lobby for the guest.

Once you wear yourself out with everything there is to do outside you can relax in your beautifully furnished room. The rooms are large. the upstairs room shave alittle balcony with chairs to sit on, The downstair rooms have a patio that opens to the lawn...nice to let the kid's run around and you can be near by your room.

My family and I have stayed at this wonderful hotel/resort numerous times and love it!! The staff is friendly and the hotel is beautiful. It is also right by Sea World. Sadly, it doesn't a shuttle. But...that is the ONLY downside to this treasure

  • Liked — The lazy river!!!!!
  • Disliked — No Sea World shuttle.

WOW...Even though the wether was beastly hot, the "lazy River" brought us out everyday/night! My 8 year old just LOVED it! Nothing but good things to say . We were delayed checking in (check in 3PM but our room wasn't ready until 6PM) they PROMPTLY with out asking gave me a $100 credit to their restaurant. HAVE fun!

We will have to go back someday because our stay was not long enough!
We planned a brief trip at the last minute for a bday & end of summer getaway. We spent only one night at this hotel.
The location is great since we planned to go to Sea World the next day. It is only a few minutes away.
Since we were celebrating a b-day, we were upgraded to a FABULOUS room. We had a king room on the 4th floor that had an adjoining parlor room. We had a full living area (with sleeper sofa) and dining area in addition to a king room.
The room was spotless and nice (furinshing were lovely and new looking). The bathrooms -all 3 of them - were large, luxurious and clean. The rooms had balconies overlooking a small courtyard.
We stayed on a Thursday night and the kids spent all afternoon and evening playing in the lazy river (tubes were free). They only got out to make s'mores at the campfire (repeatedly for the 2 hours it was available).
We did not use the spa services or eat at the resort except for breakfast which we got at the general store downstairs and picked up lattes at the Starbucks in the lobby.
We enjoyed our brief stay and look forward to doing a longer visit another time.
Another reviewer commented that the resort reminded them of Disney - we felt the same way, but it felt like a nice Disney resort. We compared it to our stay at the Wilderness Lodge. We had a really great room here, maybe that influenced our opinion, but we definitely thought it was an enjoyable place to be.

  • Liked — spacious, luxurious rooms; balconies; lazy river; lovely grounds
  • Disliked — parking should be free

A total kid-friendly experience! The resort is top-notch for kids, age 0-12. Our kids (3-yr-old twins) cried when we had to check-out. The resort does a great job with activities/amenities. Be aware of costly dining and think about going off-property for food. We ate only breakfast on the property, and it was over $40, and the kids only nibbled at cereal from the buffet. My biggest concern was imagining what a family would do if the weather was not great. All of the wonderful activities were outdoors and revolved around water. I would be disappointed if I stayed there on a rainy weekend! Check the forecast before arriving!

We just returned from this hotel. I am an older single parent and stayed here with my 4 year old son for 3 nights. This is an extremely kid friendly hotel and has wall to wall kid guests. If you do not like kids or the noise and laughter from them bother you, you may want to choose somewhere else to stay. If you are traveling with kids you will love it here.
I am a Texan and the decor is very Texas. It has alot of stone and cedar wiith slate floors in the lobby. Beautiful grounds as well. The staff is very attentive and there are alot of activities for kids as well as a small playground and volleyball net. The river was fun to float around in and my son loved digging in the sandy beach. There were buckets and shovels there for kids to dig with.
The breakfast buffet was incredible and they also had a little kid size buffet set up one night at dinner. I did not realize it beforehand but kids 4 and under eat free with an adult which was nice because my son ate for free. Our room was pretty with an extremely comfortable bed. If you come with kids bring some snack food and drinks to put in the fridge that is in the room.. Bring bottled water if you drink it because theirs in the room is outrageous at 4.50 a bottle! I found one vending machine and it was just for drinks. There is a general store downstairs with snacks but as you might imagine it is a little pricey.
I did not have time to use the spa as we spent alot of time at Sea World which was wonderful. It is only about 2 miles from the hotel. I would have liked to try it. They had an impressive fireworks show on the 4th as well.
I had read a few mixed reviews on this hotel beforehand but we encountered no problems and I would stay there again. We booked a package rate and it worked out well.

  • Liked — The kid friendly atmosphere and the comfort of the bed.
  • Disliked — That young children could not accompany you for a spa treatment.

As other reviews have noted, the Hyatt Hill Country offers a myriad of kid/teen-oriented activities. That, coupled with its close proximity to Sea World, make it a magnet for families. So, if you're considering it for a couple's getaway or a place to stay on business, I recommend that you aim for a time of year when school is in session: we were there for a Monday-Thursday stay the first week in June, and although I anticipated that a weekday stay would help work in favor of a couple's getaway, guests without children were in the distinct minority. Nothing against kids (I have a now-grown one myself), but the public areas (lobby, hallways, elevators, primary restaurant, and grounds just outside the hotel) are thus noisier & less serene.

We sprang for a suite, but unless you crave/need additional space, consider saving yourself the big $$ (we were unable to get the sweet deal on a suite snagged by previous reviewer). Contrary to our expectations, not one of the suites is -- according to the front desk clerk when we asked for another suite after first being assigned one right off the lobby -- an end unit. Rather, they are all at the "joints" of the wings. Although the suites do have a balcony, there is not even a partial wall or slatted railing dividing "your" balcony from your neighbors. Consequently,, ithe balconies end up being another common area offering not even a semblance of privacy... and serve as your neighbors' storage area for water toys, adjunct drying rack for beach towels, or supplemental play area for their children: great for them, but not for a couple hoping to have a quiet conversation & cup of coffee in the AM or a nightcap in the evening.

A couple of less-than-desirable quirks about the interior:
* there is NO desk, so if you wish to use your laptop, you need to stand at the console housing the mini-fridge; the dining table & chairs are too far away from the modem connection to be a viable alternative to a desk;
* the TV's in both the bedroom and the living room are poorly situated for viewing from the bed or sofa.. best for just 1 person ensconced in the 1 armchair in each of those 2 rooms.;
* there are no black-out drapes or other means of shielding the bedroom windows: the drapes do not pull all the way across the sheer undercurtains. We are early morning risers, so the sunlight streaming in at dawn didn't bother us, but others might not appreciate that. And, this "feature" too reduces one's privacy;
* for the price we paid, we were expecting, e.g., a more posh bathroom, less skimpy drawer space, and more than just 2 glasses in the suite (i.e., you won't mistake the Hill Country's suite for that of a Four Seasons)

On the up side:
* the lushly landscaped & spacious grounds are a welcome oasis from a day of sightseeing in the humid heat;
* the adult-only pool & large "hot tub" spa set into a waterfall grotto are lovely & open from 6 AM 'til late at night;
* we appreciated the free use of bicycles & the easy pool-side availability of beach towels;
* the golf course gets rave reviews;
* the level of housekeeping & service by the staff was fine, albeit not especially noteworthy
* although you'll pay through the nose to use any of the business services almost always offered for free by other establishments in this (or even lower) price range, there is computer/printer by the concierge desk where you can print off boarding passes at no cost;
* given the distance to downtown San Antonio, the drive there is surprisingly quick & easy; highway congestion does not seem to be common, even during rush hours;
* it was great to be able to so quickly get out into the Hill Country. We had a fun day exploring there, the highlight of our trip imo.

Lastly, I thought the spa was fabulous. It's set off in a separate, very attractive building, somewhat off the beaten path, and has its own, tranquil outdoor pool & large whirlpool with courtyard/patio. The spa space is well thought-out; I received excellent service at prices not out-of-line for this type of facility; the staff was lovely and did not attempt to sell you any products. And yes, men are welcome there too -- plus, the spa offers a light, healthy food throughout the day. In short, couples, singles, and parents looking for a respite from being "on duty" will find this a delightful place to spend time.

I would return to the Hyatt Hill Country, primarily because of the spaciousness & physical beauty of its grounds. But we'll go back with reduced expectations, and not pay the extra money for a suite.

  • Liked — the beauty of its 200 acres; the distinctive yet comfortable decor of public areas; the spa; easy access to the Hill Country with its natural beauty, fine hiking, wineries, etc.
  • Disliked — the suite design; this Hyatt's "nickel-and-diming" of its guests, especially re: computer usage
