We went for Air Force Basic Training graduation- chose to stay in town due to the Riverwalk and dining/entertainment choices- The hotel was wonderful- nice sized room with all amenities- down side was limited parking- only 1 1/2 blocks to the Riverwalk and just a few blocks from the Tower of the Americas as well. Nice continental breakfast and very helpful staff. Word to the wise- be careful when the birds flock to the trees lest you be hit with bird poop!

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. The location is great. We were able to walk everywhere. Including the Buckhorn Saloon, the Marketplace, and the Alamo. The parking cost 10 dollars. I thought that the room we stayed in needed more light. It seemed very dark. Also, it was not the cleanest room. I found a number of items (chapstick, etc.) left by the previous guests. We were not happy with the bed and the pillows seemed hard. There was no shampoo, so the maid left us two conditioners instead. When we asked for some, she had a difficult time tracking some down. The free breakfast was nice. They also had a waffle machine. I think the best thing about this hotel is the location. I'm still not exactly sure why it is called "historic." The hotel opened in 2003, and from what I read it was previously a Mexican food restaurant. It was decent, but nothing to "wow" over.

Just stayed at this hotel after doing a trip across the States with my friend. We'd stayed in larger chains for the most part, but we were both pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Great service, really good value, very clean!! Breakfast in the main lobby in the mornings, free tea and coffee whenever you like, free internet access. Room was large and the beds were really comfortable, and had a spa bath in the bathroom. Right next to the Riverwalk - so close to everything. Would definitely recommend!

My friend and I just did a trip across America, staying in many chains like Hilton - but the Obrien hotel far surpassed them all in service.
I had a mini computer and borrowed a cable from the front desk for free internet. They put on a breakfast in the morning in the lobby. The rooms are large and the beds comfy and they had a deep spa type bath in our room. Do not hesitate.

Close to the riverwalk and the downtown centre.

This historic hotel is worth it for almost every traveler out there. It's not immediately adjacent to the famed Riverwalk (i.e. no river views, but instead nice views of the Tower of the Americas and La Villita). However, it's only a pleasant 5 minute walk from the Riverwalk with rooms for much less money than the expensive Riverwalk hotels, and just because you are saving a little money does not mean you are sacrificing value. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, the beds were very nice, and the service was great. Unlike some of the ritzy overpriced hotels (*cough* Hilton *cough*), the O'Brien also had free wireless internet that worked flawlessly. There's not a lot of the other "amenities" on the list below, so this hotel is probably best suited for couples who would like a romantic getaway near the Riverwalk and might also want to check email once in a while.

My wife and I stayed there for a wedding so we got a better-than-average rate and a nicer balcony room. So if you are on a limited travel budget, you might want to look for a coupon or a promotion. If you do stay at the O'Brien, it is definitely worth it!

Not on the Riverwalk, but walking distance to almost everything makes this a very good value. We were very pleasantly surprised. Clean, helpful staff, comfortable beds, etc.

We loved this hotel! We paid $85 per night, which was a deal considering it was just 2 blocks from the River Walk. The bed was possibly the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in...really! We slept better than we did at home. We had the room closest to the front door and desk and thought this would be a problem (noise). How wrong we were. The only two complaints I have are 1. we had to take the lampshades off (the room was dim) and 2. we had to step in high to get into the shower/jacuzzi (if you get this room). We loved the 10 foot celings and old hotel charm. It's not as fancy as the Menninger or Emily Morgan, but they had a nice continental breakfast we could carry to our room and enjoy (plus cappucino/ cafe mocha available all day).
