“Only Wish I Could Stay Here.... National Historic Site”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

This is a classic hotel, worth visiting even if you can't affort to stay here. It evokes the beauty and glamour of a bygone era. Located almost next door to The Alamo, it was built only 23 years after the fall of The Alamo.

The original loby contains a fantastic stained-glass ceiling surrounding an atrium of rooms. The outside courtyard is a sight to behold! It is fun to wander through here, enjoying the historic pictures and artifacts. There is even a historic ghost hauting the hotel. The hotel itself is charming and updated without becoming another bland, generic hotel. Everyone in guest services are very polite and helpful even if you are just touring the hotel. This is a first class place! HIGHLY RECOMMEND for its unique character.

Stop by the Teddy Roosevelt Bar, where Rough Riders were recruited -- see my separate review of the Menger Bar.

Room Tip: Stay in the older section, preferrably a room overlooking the old original lobby. Ask to see the ha...

It is true the walls are paper thin, you can hear the water pipes when the people next door are flushing the toilet or taking a shower. We tried to drown out their conversations by turning up the TV. On the upside the hotel is across the street from the Alamo, you can also access the river enter mall thru an entrance on the side of the hotel. There are no frills inside the rooms but you pay for location and the historic aspect of the hotel.

I had long dreamed of staying in The Menger and was first granted that privilege on my honeymoon several years ago. Now, it's a place for our family. Our first night there was miserable! (Now, this may sound like it's going to be a bad review, but it's not!) We were in the King Suite (which is stunning), but the bed was way too hard for our liking. We actually pushed 2 of the gorgeous Victorian sofas/settees together to spend the rest of the evening! The next morning, the manager stopped us in the hallway to ask how our stay was. We were honest about the bed. The next thing we knew they were offering to switch rooms and we accepted. We were promptly escorted to the new part of the building, straight to the Presidential Suite! After the initial shock, we rushed downstairs to explain that there was no way we could afford such luxury (we were saving every penny to buy a home). The manager graciously said "Your wedding night was ruined. This is the least we can do. There's no additional charge." For the rest of our stay we were treated like royalty! What a memory!! We have since returned to San Antonio many times. We have tried other hotels, but you will usually find our family at The Menger. The staff is incredible and we've found that we are always treated just as well as we were that first time. Also, we always request the Victorian section. We've never been disappointed. What minor flaws there are only add to it's charm. And I'll add that the restaurant is fabulous. If you get the chance to visit a Christmas, it's beautiful! We always look for the ghost, but so far we never seen one. :)

Stayed for three nights mid-February on a Priceline reservation. Given a room with a double bed facing the pool in the original section of the hotel. There is a difference between an historic hotel and an old hotel. This place tends more to the historic but in some ways it's just old. The lobby area is terrific with lots of tourists walking through, looking at pictures hung on the walls and admiring the antique furniture. My room on the fourth floor had squeaking floor boards, scratched up furniture but a super tiled bathroom. The walls were so thin that I could hear my neighbors making love.
So, all in all, the public spaces are certainly worth visiting, but the original bed rooms could use some fixing up.
Did not use the restaurant. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Fitness Center leaves a lot to be desired (the few pieces of equipment are poorly maintained) and the business center charges for all computer usage except for printing a boarding pass.
Location, of course, is the best!

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, be sure to request a room in one of the newer sections.

Mr. Portland:

I would like to thank you for responding to Trip Advisor regarding your stay.

As you noted, the historical guest room section does have very unique characteristics of an older building. We are pleased to announce that a renovation of our guest rooms will occur within the next year and we look forward to the changes.

Mr. Portland, when the opportunity for you to return to San Antonio occurs, we hope you will ocne again select the Historic Menger Hotel.

My husband had read about this hotel from one of his Texas magazines so I decided to book this hotel for his birthday. Since I heard about the ghost whose name is Sally the housekeeper I decided to book in the newer part of this hotel. I wish now we booked in the original part of the hotel. I don't know how management controls their heating/ac system but we could not make our room cooler, the temp. stayed at 74 regardless of our programing. Needless to say we were very uncomfortable for the night, we are custom to sleeping in a cooler room. The hotel was interesting but I don't think we will return. Just watch out for "Sally" if you ever call at night for linens.

Thank you for advising Trip Advisor of your recent stay. Our hotel was built in 1859 and is the oldest continuous operating hotel west of the Mississippi. We have experienced many changes throughout the years and have enjoyed the ghost sighting stories of many of our guests.

We regret that you were uncomfortable during your stay and hope that when the opportunity for you to return to San Antonio arises, you will reconsider to experience the Historic Menger Hotel once again.
