“Great historic/haunted hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2014 via mobile

The hotel is amazingly rich in history from the stories to the decor. They have free wifi in the bar and hotel, although plenty of dead spots on it and cellular service to. The rooms are small an cozy, typical of old historic hotel. ***$28 a day for valet parking, one of the highest off the river.*** definently spring for a room on the historic side with a king bed, worth the extra cash.

From start to finish Menger Hotel offered it's guest a variety of reasons to enjoy their stay, plus some to look forward to with future ones. Management and guest hospitality found a way to greet me daily, and their attention to details spread throughout the beautiful architecture and historic character. The pool area was fantastic, but I'd suggest late morning to early afternoon. Palm Trees and drinks by the pool or people watch just steps from the Alamo. Enjoy an evening dinner at the hotel, or do what I did, Dinner and Grimm's Ghost Tour combo, with a special tour of Menger.

Room Tip: Rooms facing inward toward the pool area or outer rooms facing the front plaza would be best.

Obviously an old hotel, but well run carrying some history and with comfortable rooms. The staff were all great used the bar and valet parking a lot and all was good. The pool a welcome respite from the heat of the day. Angela in the bar was feisty and cool and managed to create some of the best Margaritas but she does need to get over coming second in the fantasy football 2 years ago. Great Stay.

The Menger is an impressive, beautiful and completely disarming hotel. There are wonderful antiques lining the halls, nooks, lobby, and rooms. Our room was quite large and very comfortable. We had a wall of windows covered with indoor shutters which face the charming courtyard area. The location is perfect; it is right by the Alamo and quite near the riverwalk. The bathroom was lovely and functional with no peculiarities. All in all a marvellous old place with great service and an intriguing history.

Room Tip: Our room faced the courtyard which afforded a lovely view when wanted, but could be closed off with...

This is not a cookie-cutter hotel. There are plenty of other options if that's what you prefer. As a San Antonio resident, I always recommend The Menger for the Sunday Brunch, the deep historical roots, convenience to the downtown sites, and the charming rooms. Fernando and Juan play lovely acoustical guitar during the evening meal in the Colonial Restaurant. The bartenders made a great lemon drop martini-consistent and served in a frosted, sugared stemware. Love the courtyard with the fountain and rocking chairs. The Ghost Tour and Dinner is a fun and intriguing way to spend an evening. Mr. Venegas is present and caring about his guests and their needs.

Room Tip: Expect small to exceptional, based on basic to suite preferences.

Used a Groupon for our first trip to San Antonio. Although the hotel has a more modern section, our room was in the historical, original section of the hotel. Loved the charm of the room and the history in the halls of the hotel. The hotel is a literal maze of history with stairs coming out of nowhere, etc. The staff was very personable. Our room was comfortable. Perfect for our trip! Would definitely stay again and would love to stay in one of the historical suites like the Menger Suite, King Suite, Roy Rogers Suite or Mae West Suite.

The hotel is perfectly located for a visit to San Antonio. It is a few minutes walk from practically everything you will want to see - River Center Mall, the Alamo, the River Walk, River Walk boat tours, La Villita, Market Square and a lot of historical buildings. There are tons of great restaurants with a short walk of the hotel.

Across the street from the Alamo, next to the mall, short walk to the Riverwalk and Cathedral. The hotel is historic, but didn't lack convenience. The bathroom was a little small, but I'm not picky it did the trick! Some said they didn't have water pressure, we hade the opposite problem. It was so strong the overspray would flood the floor. And be sure to watch your chest area (ouch! Lol) would definitely stay here again!
