Ferry Landing Suites
Ranked #15 of 17 Friday Harbor B&B and Inns

I just stayed at the Yakima Suite (one of the Ferry Landing Suites) with a friend of mine during our recent Friday Harbor visit and I couldn't have been happier w/the small condo. I've stayed at a few places on the island (Earthbox Inn, Roche Harbor Resort & the campground at the Lakedale Resort) but after staying in the Yakima Suite... I don't think I'll ever stay anywhere else. Located directly across from the ferry landing, we had a stunning view of the harbor and the marina, from the top floor of a charming Victorian (which houses a great coffee shop on the 1st floor). Each morning we drank our coffee while looking out on the fog lifting over the marina and each afternoon we watched the ferries load and unload while enjoying wine & cheese in the little living room. The studio unit was very comfortable w/a nice queen bed and sofa bed. The kitchenette was small but included all we needed for a good retreat. And there was very good amenities in the condo, including coffee, tea, hot chocolate in the kitchenette as well as Molton Brown soap/shampoo/conditioner, etc. in the bathroom. Also, while the previous reviewers indicated that there was no parking... it appears the property mgmt. fixed that because there is now a dedicated parking spot just at the front door for each "suite"... so parking was extremely easy. The only thing I'd recommend is that the property mgmt. look into the water heating for the unit because the shower would never get that hot (warm but not hot) and on a cold morning... it's nice to have a hot shower! But that wouldn't hold me back because I can't wait to stay there again!

You can't get more in the middle of the bustle at Friday Harbor. The ferry pulled right up to eye level with our second floor suite. The large common room with integrated kitchen was a great in-town home base for our extended family spread around the island in different lodgings. There is no end of activity in the summer and the bustle is fun but noisy. The two bedrooms were small, but comfortable. The coffee shop downstairs is like having your own in-house barista staff. Loved that! Everything else the island's main town has to offer is right outside, shopping, cafes, kayak outfitters, seaplanes, boat tours, ferry. It makes for a very nice visit, but there are some drawbacks so be aware. The lodgings have many steps. Be prepared to trudge and don't book if you have trouble climbing stairs. The bedrooms get noisy when the ferry loading lanes fill up next door, and that happens at "oh dark thirty." At these prices, there absolutely should be parking. BTW, the island is a fantastic visit! Saw Orca whales three times on this trip.

As our ferry nosed into the dock, we noticed the handsomely painted Victorian house, adorned with window boxes bursting with petunias, sitting directly across the street. The one-room studio at its top -- Yakima Suite -- was to be ours for three nights with check-in by means of a lockbox code anytime after 4pm. We congratulated ourselves on our timing, even managed to locate a parking spot just a block away (no small feat but there's no designated parking space for Ferry Landing Suites), hauled our luggage up the steps and then after struggling awhile with the combination lock that had been put on upside down, opened the door to...a mess! A housekeeping slip-up apparently; the manager at Lakedale Resort suggested we get some dinner, and all would be in order when we returned in a couple hours. Hot, tired and cranky, we ambled up A Street to Backdoor Kitchen where crankiness dissipated. Finally it seemed "safe" at 7:30pm to return to our third floor retreat.
Ah...much, much better! The Yakima is tastefully furnished in inviting colors with art on the walls (even in the bathroom), a comfortable queen size bed nestled in an alcove, a kitchenette (with microwave and basic cooking utensils provided) and dining area, side deck overlooking Friday's Crab House next door and a sofa and balcony overlooking the harbor and ferry...plenty of window cut-outs, even surprisingly in the shower. Too cloudy to utilize the skylight above our bed to see stars, but we were asleep not long after sunset anyway.
The Doctor’s Office -- serving coffee, juices, baked goods -- was located on the ground floor of our ferry landing retreat, and my sweet husband would go down each morning for coffee and day-old marion berry scones or such to warm in the microwave. Meanwhile on our first morning I was growling at Lakedale's management once again as there was no hair dryer in the bathroom (though I'd specifically asked about a hair dryer and iron and had email confirmation of such). Really Lakedale will want to step up their attention to this in-town property.
Despite some shortfalls, however, we were glad we'd booked Yakima Suite. Evenings before dinner we retreated to our little studio balcony, uncorked our Ste. Micelle 2007 Muscat Canelli and watched the seaplanes, ferries and other vessels coming and going. We liked being right in Friday Harbor able to easily browse galleries and shops and walk to fine meals at Market Chef, Coho and Steps. If you're coming to SJI for a rustic getaway, choose other lodging.
