“Impressively nice, worth a return”
Reviewed 16 August 2011

Stayed 3 days/2 nights. Inn representative waited on arrival-we were late because we missed our intended ferry. Total service; room attractive, comfortable, quiet and right at the edge of the harbor which put us in the center of things. Suite of 2 rooms would easily accommodate 6+ people, even if some of them needed a sleeping bag. People were knowledgeable about island attractions and activities, went the extra mile to help out when there were changes in plans. Pricey, but worth it.

If you enjoy modern design and want the convenience of a spacious house with housekeeping service located in the heart of Friday Harbor, this is your place! My husband and I stayed here for 4 days with our 2 children (ages 9 and 5). We stayed in Penthouse 2. We loved the view of the harbor and all of us enjoyed watching the boats and seaplanes coming and going. The hotel is conveniently located with walking distance of the ferry (although we did bring our car) as well as within walking distance of the grocery store, multiple restaurants, and other interesting places to check out (e.g. The Whale Museum). The steam shower in the master bathroom was amazing--I've been missing it ever since we came home. We also all enjoyed the rooftop deck--we all thought it would have been perfect if there was a fire pit on the deck but didn't know if there were fire hazard concerns given it's rooftop location. Extra bonus--they also had the world's best smelling hand soap ever!

My husband and I spend two nights at the Island Inn and really enjoyed our stay. We arrived late but were able to arrange with the Inn's staff to have a cab meet us at the airport. When we got to the Island Inn, Misty was there to show us to our room. We stayed in a Euro room, which was small but just the right size for the two of us, particularly since there was a large shared lounge with beautiful views of the harbor. The decor is simple and modern and the artwork is by local artists. There was an attached bathroom with a large shower and my tall husband particularly enjoyed the high showerhead. We appreciated the free wifi in the rooms and the tasty granola and coffee in the mornings. The location was also superb. It was a great jumping off point to explore the cute little town of Friday Harbor since it is right across from the Ferry. There are tons of restaurants and shops within just a few blocks of the Inn. The only thing we had a problem with was the morning light. The sun rises early in the summer in Washington and the rooms let in a fair amount of light (there was a big window in Euro 1), so if you are easily awakened by morning sunlight, I would recommend bringing a sleeping mask to help you sleep in a bit.

If you are a fan of modern architecture and design, this is the place for you. The penthouses are both beautiful and comfortable and have great amenities (ours even had a washer and dryer). The views of Friday Harbor are spectacular.

Yes, the view is lovely (even though they blocked an older establishment). Penthouse #1 has an amazing roof top deck. However, other than the nice soap/shampoo/conditioner, there is little else to be impressed with at this inn. I don’t understand, especially since there is little else in the way of hotels on this island, why such a nice place from the outside, lacks so many of the “higher” qualities that you look for in resort hotels on the inside. There is little competition on the island in general and I do believe that with some feedback/suggestions below taken into account, that 123 West Inn could one day get there. However, right now this is definitely a place that tries to be considered high end, but falls short. I do have standards, but they are no different than yours (you the reader), or so I hope. I do expect, that I get what I pay for whatever the establishment might be. I also expect customer service to exist, especially after you have a bad first impression.

Below is the feedback we directly gave the manager in email. The first three are pain points and the other two are suggestions.

1. Your website does not provide actual directions to the lobby of your Inn. Based on your address you are located at the top of the steps on West St. and there is no signs indicating to new guests that you need to walk down the stairs to the lobby. The four of us wandered around for 10 minutes trying to find the lobby. This was a source of frustration for us after a long drive and ferry ride over to the island. But this would easily be remedied by putting directions on your site, a sign at the top of the hill or "real" directions off the ferry to your lobby in the email confirmation a guest receives when they book with you. The response I received at the front desk was.."we tell all our guests when they book what they actual directions are". This was not the response I wanted to after looking around for 10 minutes especially when I was not one of the guests who received this information.

2. Second and most disturbing, after checking in to Penthouse #1 we found that the downstairs bathroom had not been clean. There was such an oversight with housekeeping that the toilet was clogged and had an un-flushed bowel movement still lingering within it. This lack of cleanliness left us very leery and uneasy about what else had been overlooked when the room was cleaned. This of course is unacceptable at any price level of accommodations (and we have stayed all over the world from hostels to 5 star hotels), but when you are paying $500+ a night, it is nearly impossible to recover from a first (or second rather) impression like that. The man at the front desk (do not recall his name) cleaned the bathroom within about 10-15 minutes of us reporting it. But there was no additional effort or offer made to apologize to us or to improve our stay at your inn. I think some sort of offer would have gone a long way in reaffirming your appreciation of your guests.

3. As our booking indicated, there was four of us that were staying in the penthouse. Around 5pm on Friday we requested 2 additional deck chairs for the outside deck (since there were only 2 provided). It took until 3pm on Saturday for us to get the additional 2 chairs. We did not think this was an unreasonable request and were disappointed with both how long it took to fulfill as well as why there are not four chairs provided initially since this penthouse description on your website indicates that four people can comfortably stay in this room. Surely the deck and view is a sense of pride for the 123 West Inn team and ownership. My recommendation would be to spend the additional money and get some extra chairs.

4. The ferry schedule that you provide in the room does not include the Sunday schedule. This seems like an easy add and a good thing to include, especially when so many of your guests travel on Sundays.

5. This is a small suggestion but it seems a bit excessive to have to pay $20/day to park in the garage when you are paying $500/night. I know that you may feel justified in doing so given the lack of real estate in Friday Harbor, but this does not give your guests a very welcoming feeling.

We genuinely apologize for any experience that is less than exceptional and, unfortunately, are saddened and perplexed by this review. We pride ourselves in delivering intuitive guest service and were never presented with any service level concerns throughout this experience. Most unfortunate, we have reached out to follow up by both phone and e-mail but have received no reply.

Detailed directions to The Island Inn at 123 West are communicated in all e-mail reservation confirmations. We have also dedicated two pages on our website to way finding (To Friday Harbor and To The Island Inn) and link to each of these pages in a reminder message delivered three days prior to every scheduled guest arrival. Lastly, we phone our guests on the morning of their arrival to both confirm their arrival time and create the opportunity to provide any additional direction or information they may require.

We thoroughly prepare and inspect all guestrooms prior to each guest arrival and appoint our accommodations with helpful and fun items to make for a great experience. Luxurious bath and bed linens, a custom coffee blend, hand crafted furnishings, original artwork and a few surprises help differentiate our venue and enhance our guests’ experience. Most important, all of our rooftop decks offer four chairs and a table.

We are at your service and happy to enrich your experience in every way possible.

This was a very well-designed hotel/inn with a terrific location right near the dock in Friday Harbor. The owners could not have been more helpful and friendly.

We stayed in Penthouse 5 for 3 nights in July 2011 and loved the experience. The location is great - you overlook the harbor but there was no external noise - and the suite itself is a knockout. Sleek modern kitchen, fully equipped with top of the range appliances, and a huge, open living area. The bed and bed-linen were top quality and very comfortable - we slept well - and the double-vanity bathroom and steam shower are also first-rate. Scott and Misty were very solicitious hosts and we had a really good time here - it's a high-end experience and thus not inexpensive, but the quality of the accommodation is really outstanding.
