I loved this little motel. It must have great feng shui and a very talented designer. The room and lobby decor made me happy. The staff were very accomodating. The gardens were gorgeous. I loved its originality. It was a bit pricy but worth it to a couple looking for a great place to relax and have fun.

July is high tourist season in the San Juan Islands so nothing is cheap. I had to accept that and not let it get in the way off having a good time.
This place is an older motel that has had a makeover and some groovy colors. It seemed a little spendy when we first started looking on-line; the rate was ~ $235 for 4 people, but that was less than some other places, so that's what the market supports. The same room in Burlington would be around $100. We were only there 1 nite, did not take advantage of the juice bar or spa, so I can't really speak to those features.
It is about 4 blocks up the hill from the ferry terminal, so it is convenient to the downtown area and easy walking distance for us. They do provide a secure area to store your luggage before you can check in or after you check out and still want to look around town.
The room was clean, if a little dark, your basic motel room with 2 queens. The staff was very friendly & helpful, both thru e-mail & in person. We hope to visit again in spring or fall, and would consider using this motel as a base for biking & sightseeing around the islands.

We stayed here one night just because the B& B we stayed at was not available our whole trip. Although Earthbox is at a good location close to town, it is noisy and definitely not worth the high price of the room.

This is an old highway-style motel with a new trendy name and fresh coat of paint and new furnishings.

On the plus side, the staff is nice enough, though a little clueless/untrained. Also, rooms were clean and pleasant.

On the minus side, it's just a little noisy motel that's been remodeled. We stayed in a ground-floor room and the noise from upstairs guests was really thunderous until they went to bed. There was no ventilation in the room, so we had to keep the windows open.

We spent as little time as possible on the property; the "lounge area" that looks so inviting in the photos is just a couple of tables next to the parking lot. There are much nicer places to hang out on the island.

Not a bad place to spend the night, but at the prices they charge it really should be better. I guess they are getting these rates, because the place appeared to be full, but it's kind of a joke if you ask me.

Because there are so few rooms in Friday Harbor, they can price what they want for these rooms. They are nowhere near a 3 star hotel anywhere else.

EarthboxLaura, Manager at Earthbox Inn & Spa, responded to this review, 15 August 2010
Dear Collie087,
Thank you for taking the time to let us know what you thought of your stay. I'm so sorry you felt like we were gouging you just because we can.
If our place was on the mainland our rates would be lower, for sure. But please keep in mind that everything, from pillow to nail to coffee cup needs to be shipped or flown here. Our utilities are much more expensive than on the mainland, especially water, so are wages, taxes, repairs, property and goods. In addition to all that our season is very short. So partly you are paying for staying in this unique place when it's Summer (all two month of it) and all three whale pods are frolicking.
Again, we are so sorry that you didn't feel it was worth it.
Please come back sometimes during the off season. Our Falls especially are very beautiful. Our resident J-Pod is around all year, it's less crowded and we run fantastic specials.
Have a great rest of the Summer.
Sincerely,
Steffi Wehner

We stayed at the Earthbox Motel and Spa for 3 nights July 22-25th and were very happy with our choice. Front desk staff very helpful and friendly and we checked in early as our room was ready which was great. We had a lovely room on the second floor, with 2 queen beds, great little fridge, microwave, nice shower, and enough room for stretching after our bike rides. The only problem was the room was a bit dark and it was very warm at night even with the fan on! Not sure if that was the room or just the heat but couldn't have slept without the fan. We ate 2 nights at the Backdoor Kitchen and 1 night at Coho. Both excellent service and food, but you def. need reservations. The first night at Backdoor Kitchen we ate at the bar and ended up having an amazing time so booked a table for the Sat. night and they remembered us and gave us a fabulous table by an open doorway to the patio. The vegetarian food particularly was excellent. We HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. The riding was amazing, the shopping is very good, great shops and boutiques and a great grocery store, King Market. We will definitely go back again!
