When I first started doing research for our trip to Friday Harbor to go whale watching, I was disgusted at the rates some of the hotels in the area charge just for a one night stay. Wayfarer's Rest was a big relief and a perfect solution for a budget-minded couple who still wanted a clean and friendly place to stay. We stayed in one of the cabins for 3 nights and it was such a quaint, cozy little place that really matched the rustic nature of San Juan Island. They had a power strip for us to charge phones and computers and the mattresses/sheets were clean and comfortable. We even got a strong wifi signal in the back cabin! Obviously the bathrooms and kitchens were a high traffic area so they showed some wear and there was grass on the floor each morning before the daily cleaning where people had walked into the house to go to the bathroom from the cabins outside, but I always felt like I was staying in a clean and comfortable place. Being able to make breakfast each morning was a huge money saver and this hostel was a very short walk from town. Be sure to look at Google maps for the easiest way to walk into town--if you walk through the business park there is a trail through a field and then you are right down by the ferry landing which saves a lot of walking time.
