We spent 3 nights on the island and couldn’t have picked a better place to stay. Helen the Innkeeper is a wonderful host. The room was big and spacious with a very comfortable bed. The location of the Inn makes for a very quiet and relaxing stay but still only 15 minutes from Friday Harbor.

The Highland Inn is a 2 room bed and breakfast on San Juan Island. It is in a large beautiful home owned by the host, Helen King. It is very private (only 2 rooms, in the countryside and surrounded by trees), but has a great view of the strait, where whales may swim by (we were too late in the year). Helen is the perfect host. She makes fresh cookies every day (you will ask for the recipe) and serves a delicious, varied and filling breakfast either in your room or at the dining room table. The home is beautifully appointed. Binoculars and telescopes are provided. She has many friends on the island that she can direct you to for activities, including Captain Jim Maya for a private 4 person whale watch tour. Helen is there when you need her but keeps out of your way. She is very experienced running bed and breakfasts, having run this for 12 years and a large B and B in Santa Cruz before that. She will go the extra mile. I forgot one of my bags (the one with the car keys) when we went to the ferry, and she drove my bag to the ferry to catch me before it left. Rooms have whirlpool, steam shower (very nice) and log fireplace. Doors lead to the outdoor patio. You could not ask for more. We will definitely be back, next time in whale watching season.

Stayed here with my wife two nights before and one night after an overnight sea kayak excursion and things worked out perfectly. The inn is just as advertised: quiet, serene, spacious with one of the most beautiful water views in the world. If you are visiting San Juan Island with a car then definitely stay here. It is an easy drive, less than 15min from Friday Harbor and no problem going in an out of town as there are no traffic lights on the Island.

Helen was a very gracious host and helped us celebrate a special occasion while we were there. As the other reviews mentioned, she does run a tight ship but was more than accomodating to us during our stay. The two course breakfast was excellent and varied day to day with fresh fruit, home made muffins and egg dishes and Helen was very willing to accommodate my wife's special dietary needs.

The view is really spectacular with the entire Olympic Penninsula, Victoria and Vancouver Island in plain sight. The first morning we woke up to the sounds of splashing and spouting Orcas and watched them for about 45 min right from our balcony. We stayed in the Whale Watch suite which has a slightly better view though the Haro suite is a little more cozy.

Would stay here again in a heartbeat if ever coming back to the San Juans.

Overall our one night stay at Highland Inn was fantastic. Helen was courteous and welcoming. She brought us some fresh lemonade while taking care of paper work which was delicious. There is tons of info about the island in the large comfy rooms. Breakfast was delicious and there was fruit, gold fish crackers and yummy homemade cookies in your room upon arrival. The reason for the 4 out of 5 is that for the price of the room we thought that the shower and bath fixtures could use some updating. We really enjoyed our stay here.

I could not have asked for a more idyllic vacation spot (and I tend to be quite picky). Everything one could dream of was at your fingertips. To begin with the view from the lovely large room and deck were to die for. There were endless water views that I sat and stared at for hours in lieu of going to lime kiln point where I would have had crowds and no hammock or chairs to sit in. I sat and sipped tea and ate home made cookies provided by the proprietress who went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable. Large delicious breakfasts were served in our room and we had a bowl of fruit at our ready. We even had a small refrigerator in our room to use. We ate at wonderful restaurants recommended by her and had 2 great kayak trips with views of orca and seals. We ended our days with a japanese steam shower and than sat by the lovely wood burning fireplace all in our room.
