“Nature's roadhouse”
Reviewed 20 October 2011

My wife and I have been staying here for over twenty five years. We have lived in Albuquerque and Denver during that time, and in between visit Santa Fe whenever possible. In Santa Fe, this is the only place to stay. It's a 1930's (or older) motor court expanded, totally refurbished, and excellently maintained (they have their own greenhouse on premise to replenish the grounds). Many different room styles and very unique rooms with patios, vegas, and kivas, add to the enjoyment, as well as the park like nature habitat within the motel grounds. I would tell you our favorite room but then you might book it when we want IT!

If you really want a true taste of the Santa Fe Experience (and it is an experience), then this is the place.

By the way, compared to other high end Santa Fe lodging, it's reasonable, but the El Rey is not cheap. We think it's great value for the money, but if you want cheap, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms around the original garden are best, they have a web site with room map...print this and then...

Pros: Comfortable bed, hot shower, cute setting.
Cons: Lounge is too dark for reading, lights in room over reading area and vanity also low wattage (25 watts), staff was argumentative when I asked that heat be turned on (it was 66 degrees in the room). Very few channels on TV. Staff also lacking in knowledge as far as directions and touristy things to do.

Room Tip: Check out the wattage in the lights if you read at night.

We visit Santa Fe every September and always enjoy staying at El Rey. The rooms are nice, and it is in an excellent location. Easy access to the plaza as well as other activities. In making reservations for this trip (months ahead of time) I mentioned my husband's birthday. Upon arrival we found a bottle of wine with a card from the staff in our room. Nice touch.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter. Garden in front of north courtyard rooms is lovely.

We were delighted to stay in Santa Fe on old Route 66 for under $100.00. Beautiful garden area. Good restaurant (The Pantry) only a block away. Great breakfast! Computer in lobby. We will be back and for a longer period of time.

Wonderful "girls retreat". Very enchanting grounds, nice pool, clean rooms. Nice location, near the railyard which is a must for the amazing farmers market. The Pantry restaurant is just one block away with great home cooked new mexican food. Loved everything about this place, will be back for sure!!!

It was a surprise because we had not planned to stay in Santa Fe when we passed through, but it was late and raining. The hotels downtown were all full due to some convention, so we spotted the El Ray from the street. How charming and friendly! Caretakers could not have been nicer, pointing out a great diner in walking distance and finding us a sweet room that we could park our bike in front of. Loved the skylight in the bathroom! Lots of throw-back touches for a comfortable stay. Hope we can return sometime. What a great break from a box motel!

Room Tip: These are not cookie-cutter rooms. Talk about it.
