It's not often that every guidebook recommends the same place, but I can see why they do the El Rey for Santa Fe. That plus the rave reviews here on TA convinced us to stay and we are very glad we did. The drive down Cerrillos road from i-25 is dismal but the El Rey complex was simply gorgeous with all the roses in full bloom. For once we could literally smell the flowers. Ravens everywhere added an exotic touch for us.
The neighborhood is fine, in fact just two doors down the street on the same side is a thrift shop where we bought a designer denim jacket for $4. Even though we booked on Expedia instead of directly with El Rey, they gave us a very nice room off the courtyard with a fountain and benches. It's a straight shot down to the plaza and very easy drive.
The breakfast staff is cheery and the ambience great. The pool was indeed very popular but we preferred to sit outside the room and read and watch the ravens splash in the fountains Parking was easy and plentiful and free. A very good bargain,

I chose to book this hotel because of the TA reviews. I'm so glad I did. The Inn is a motel style complex set in a large landscaped garden full of beautiful birds and trees. There is an excellent swimming pool - a decent size, though the shallow end could be larger. It has as many loungers as is possible and a terrific hot tub (there is a second tub but I never used it). We used the pool all 4 days of our stay (after not having used any pool in our previous 7 hotels/motels on this trip).
Rooms were decently sized and pleasantly appointed with very comfy mattresses, and with great soap in the bathrooms. Breakfast was in a lovely hacienda style room with lovely Spanish guitar music in the background. The two members of staff in the breakfast room are lovely and come round with little bowls of cut fruit. The coffee (even the sachets in the room) had real flavour unlike most motels.
The motel is 2 miles from the centre on the Cerillos Road but the Bus Number 2 stops outside regularly - but the last back is at 9.30pm. Worth checking out their internet deals too. A real destination motel/inn at a modest price for what it is. We are so happy that we stayed there.

Thanks to my fellow Trip Advisors who posted previously about the El Rey Inn, my sister and I chose to stay here during our overnight stop in Santa Fe.

We loved it! Our room was about midway in the complex (double queen) and was far bigger than we expected. We did not use the pool, but we went to look at it and it was clean and inviting. Our room was directly across from a tiny courtyard with a water fountain and it was a nice spot to sit and relax. The hotel property exudes a quirky charm that is very endearing.

Some previous posters mentioned the neighborhood. Don't let it scare you -- the neighborhood is old and tired, but we felt perfectly safe here.

One more thing -- be sure to eat at The Pantry, which is an easy walk from the hotel. The food is reasonably priced and you won't find a better spinach enchilada anywhere else in Santa Fe.

I highly recommend the El Rey Inn and would definitely stay there again in the future.

I was extremely cautious about booking this place. My partner decided to do it so trusting his judgement, I did and boy were we glad to do it. The hotel looks scary from the front but once we walked into the lobby, we couldn't believe our eyes. It was very nice, not your typical regular hotel. This place has charm. Our room is quite nice and tastefully decorated (Rm 34). It's right next to the laundry facility. There's a small fridge, something we didn't have at the Marriott which we paid way more for it. Very quiet, extremely clean and it's close to everything. Breakfast in the morning is very good and the personnel very attentive. Would I recommend this place. YOU BET because I will definitley stay here again. I posted few pictures of our room.

This was our first visit to Santa Fe and the El Rey Inn was a highlight of our trip. Apparently each room is different, so I should say we were in rm 53 ,which is at the back of the property in the lower floor of a 2-story building. At least back here, it is very quiet with no road noise. The room is very spacious and comfortable with really nice, unique touches like an attractive ceiling light, brick floors, pretty throw rugs, exposed roof beams, seating area, and a sliding door to a little patio with patio table and chairs. We love sitting outside on our little patio and listening to the birds in the gardens. The grounds are beautifully cared for, with several courtyard gardens and a lot of outdoor seating. The property overall is clearly well cared for and they have tried to provide many amenities-- such as free wireless internet in the rooms. Everything is tastefully done, romantic without being frilly. Our encounters with the staff-- they have all been excessively friendly and helpful. When we made the room reservation, the clerk described the room accurately. Everyone emphasizes the location, 2 miles from the plaza, but actually we were glad to be a little way away from the plaza and take a break from that scene. 2 miles are a bit far too walk but they're a very short drive. Although it's a little cold out for the pool, yet, it looks nice. There are also 2 hot tubs and a sauna. The continental breakfast is just that-- but it's an excellent selection and gave us plenty to start the day (toast, eggs, tortillas, chile sauce, fruit, juice, coffee, instant oatmeal, granola, yogurt, ...)

If you want a hotel that is friendly, to both tourists and locals, reflects the charm and character of Santa Fe, and is nothing like a major chain hotel, then stay at the El Rey. The thick adobe walls kept the traffic noise out of our street-side room, the healthy continental breakfast (granola and soy milk as well as Cheerios and OJ, fresh hot tortillas if you ask), and the exceptionally friendly service made for a very pleasant stay. Although there is not a full-service restaurant on site, The Pantry, a short block away, serves great Santa Fe food in a casual atmosphere. I think we were the only people there who didn't run into people they knew! Obviously, it's where the locals go to eat.

We stayed at the El Ray for 5 nights, and had a great time. The Inn itself of composed of two old Route 66 motels that have been amalgamated and totally renovated. The grounds are immaculate, and have obtained an urban wildlife certification. A lot of work has gone into renovating and maintaining this property, and they have a number of amenites including two hot tubs (one indoors and one outdoor) + a pool (closed during the Winter). We were staying during off season, and enjoyed a 25% discount for booking over the internet. Even at full price this Inn is reasonable by Santa Fe standards. A continental breakfast is offered during high season, and a coupon worth the equivalent at a charming eatery next door was offered during our stay.

The room we stayed in was small but clean and well appointed. You have to remember that this started out as a motel back in the early 50's, so only so much can be done to renovate. There are larger and much more luxurious rooms available, with in-room hot tubs, etc for a higher price, but we had elected for the basic 2-queen bed room at the cheaper rate. The staff were great and the hotel was very quiet during our stay.

The only negatives were very minor. The Inn sits off of very busy Cerrillos Road, and visibility when exiting isn't great. However, a traffic light a couple of blocks away breaks the traffic flow and allows you exit if you wait a couple of minutes. Although drink machines are scattered throughout the property, vending machines for snacks, etc are only available at a couple of locations and were poorly stocked when we were there. The Inn is well staffed with maintenance and cleaning staff so put your Do Not Disturb sign out if you don't want to be wakened early'ish by the maids.

Aside from those minor quibbles, we had a great time and highly recommend this hotel. We can't wait to return
