Prior to my family's trip to Santa Fe in July, my wife contacted Santa Fe Walkabouts for suggestions on possible hikes given our interests and the fact that we would have our eight year old daughter along. SFW provided us a few different appropriate options, and we picked the one that sounded best to us -- a walking tour of the Bandelier National Monument.
Our guide was Deborah, and she picked us up at our hotel on the morning of our tour and drove us into Bandelier. During most hours of the day, visitors can't drive all the way to Frijoles Canyon (part of Bandelier) but have to take a shuttle bus in from White Rock. As a tour company, however, SFW is permitted to bypass the shuttle and take you to the canyon. Deborah drove us to Juniper Campground, which is adjacent to the canyon, and we then hiked the Frey Trail down into the canyon. The hike down this trail was amazing with breathtaking views plus the opportunity to explore the former cave dwellings of the ancestors to the Pueblo people.
All along the hike, Deborah explained the history of the area and answered our questions -- including answering (with good humor) a seemingly endless stream of questions from our eight year old. While the Frey Trail was not exceptionally difficult to hike, we likely wouldn't have tried it without an experienced guide like Deborah at our side. Personally, I really appreciated not having to be in charge or worry that we were taking a wrong turn during the hike. I could just enjoy the hike, confident that Deborah would make sure that we stayed on the right track.
On the canyon floor, we took a break and enjoyed some provided water and granola bars and then we hiked to the major sites on the floor. Finally, we ended at the Visitors' Center and then Deborah drove us back to our hotel.
The hike itself was a little over three hours and the drive to and from Bandelier took about another two hours. It wasn't an inexpensive tour, but it was worth the money for the experience we received. We will certainly look up Santa Fe Walkabouts on our next visit to Santa Fe!
