“The history of chocolate, and its future ...”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

You have to think to stop here the first time. On Paseo de Peralta, a tiny bit further than you'd naturally walk on your way from the Plaza to Canyon Road, the only time you'll have to think about turning the car into the lot is that first time. After that, you're addicted. Kakawa is all about teaching the history of sipping chocolates. Wonder what Thomas Jefferson might of sipped? How Marie Antoinette probably liked her chocolate? Think that almond milk might be the ticket for your new lactose intolerance? Or the Mexicans really have the goods when it comes to the hot stuff? Your answers are all here, and some questions you hadn't thought to ask. Add chocolate truffles and custom caramels (salted, chilled, lavender, basil, hot pepper) to truly die for and a staff who enjoys giving you a sample sip or two, this is what real chocolate tasting is all about.

“Awesome ”

I love to go to Kakawa and have a cup of the chocolate with Chile. The sweeter, more flowery ones are also great. They will let you taste several to determine what you like. If you like chocolate, you must try it. Their candy is also wonderful, haven't tried any cakes.

“NOT really a restaurant”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Kakawa is fun, but it is a mostly place for chocolate and chocolate drinks. You would not go there for a full meal, tho maybe for dessert, or take out chocolate. Also, I have been there many times (I live in SF) and have usually found the young staff to have an "attitude". Not really welcoming, sort of like"oh, we will tolerate you annoying tourists, but we are so cooler than you." I often go in winter for a nice, unusual hit drink, but that's it.

“A little perfection in every cup!”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

My husband and I tried Kakawa based on trip advisor members' amazing reviews. We were not disappointed. From its charming decor (leather seating in southwestern style) to attentive and patient counter service, we were delighted. Having never experienced "drinking chocolate" (aka "elixirs" the way they were originally served, we were offered tastes of a variety of different potable sweet, warm temptations (with varying degrees of "heat" of the chili variation). Topped off with a shared brownie and macaroon - it was a treat we'll never forget. Just like its home town. Kakawa is truly the perfect accompaniment to the wonders of Santa Fe. Thanks to everyone at Tripadvisor who recommended this spot!

“Decadent!!”
Reviewed 25 May 2014 via mobile

Samples!! Just so you get exactly what your chocoholic craving desires! The Horchata is exceptional, as well. The staff are friendly and there is no air of rushing people out the door. They provide a relaxed atmosphere that adds to the 5 star overall experience. Mmmmmmmm
