While New Mexico has many options for Wine Tasting and has many very good breweries and beers, Santa Fe Spirits is one of a few distilleries in the State.
They have a tasting room in Downtown Santa Fe, but a group of 8 booked a tour and tasting at the distillery itself and learned how the spirits are made. An interesting tour and some great options for creating your cocktails.
I particularly liked the Silver Coyote which is a clear pure malt whiskey.
The Wheelers western dry gin using local botanicals like cactus blossom, osha root and desert sage combine to make a great smooth gin.
We have been on distillery tours before. This tour was not worth it. The guide was a nice bartender who read from a piece of paper and couldn't answer questions. We knew more than the guide did. The group on with free drinks, saved the experience. The tasting was good and the drinks were excellent. I highly recommend the gin and tonic made with homemade tonic. They should sell the stuff.
I am not a spirits drinker but have done other food/drink tours and found that they were fun, interesting and usually full of fun local facts/history. This was indeed along those line. We learned a ton about the distilling processes of whiskey, brandy and gin from our guide James and had a fun group to taste with and chat about Santa Fe and the spirits we were sampling.
We didn't know the Distillery existed if it hadn't been for a Groupon coupon. We learned a lot about making spirits with the help of a very knowledgeable hostess. After the tour, we were treated to a tasting of 5 different spirits and then a full drink of our choice. It was a fun outing.
This was our first distillery tour and I feel like we didn't learn anything. OK, well, we probably did learn a few things... But either way, I wasn't impressed with the tour at all. From the bar/meeting area you walk into one room where they make the spirits. We spent about 10 minutes there then walked back through the meeting area to the barrel storage room. The barrel room was kind of neat, but we only spent about 5 minutes there.
That being said, we had an good time overall during our visit to the distillery. We met some cool people there and sampled some excellent and unique alcohol.
Santa Fe Spirits is a great way to spend an hour or so of your afternoon. When you first arrive, you'll walk into the tasting area with a small bar. You are greeted by the staff who will take you on your tour. The tour is fairly short, but informative. You get to see all the mash and distilling tanks, as well as the barrell room. The tour finishes back in the tasting bar area where you get to sample all 5 of the spirits they produce or distill there: vodka, whiskey, aged whiskey, brandy, and gin. The gin was probably the most flavorful gin I've ever had. You can also try some of their mixed drinks for an additional fee. Their mixologist has come up with some creative drinks for each of their spirits. Overall a great trip!
