On the site of a closed Terriyaki place and refurbished quite handsomely for a very moderate cost place drawing local folks for lunch from the government offices and shops nearby, this sushi and regular Japanese fare spot (with a few dishes for the Chinese folks in town) boasts a clean and spacious dining area, very friendly staff, and a vast array of surprisingly outstanding choices. My wife had a wonderful soup with a fresh lobster 'roll' that she had to take home. I had the tempura friend crab cake appetizer -- excellent at 6.95---and then broiled salmon (a nice sized portion) and vegetables for 7.95. You can easily eat here with a beverage for under $10 and feel full.

We haven't tried supper, but we'll be back for lunch a lot. It's on the main business drag, but youll need to keep your eye peeled for it.

Based on some positive local reviews, we were eager to try the newest Japanese restaurant in Santa Fe.

All the positive review we have read for Tokyo Cafe have been for lunch. We chose dinner and we were disappointed..

As we entered , the restaurant had the right look and feel; the service was eager and competent, but the food seemed 'tired.'

An appetizer of mussels was awash in a cloying room temperature mayonnaise. The mussels tasted good, but the quality and quantity of sauce was overbearing.

The sashimi platter had several pieces of fish that were past their prime, and the beef teriyaki platter was overcooked and cold. A $2.00 up-charge for brown rice brought a serving of room temperature, watery, flavorless grains.

The special dessert - tempura banana - was an unripe banana, crispy on the outside, and room temperature and hard inside. The offering was topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. We were encouraged to try the special 'tempura cheesecake.'

We were disappointed: perhaps we visited for dinner at the end of a long holiday weekend, and the kitchen was tired, but we expected more. Our taste for Japanese food has been honed in trips to Japan. In Southern California, where we lived for 17 years, good Asian food is bountiful.

Finding good Asian food at a fair price in Santa Fe is a challenge. Tokyo Cafe has all the markings of filling the bill. Our first visit was inconsistent and lackluster.

This is a very new Sushi restaurant and is the furthest south Sushi you can get in town. Prices are very average for sushi. The dining room is large and can accommodate many people. Lunch specials under $20 are usual. I went in and the place was dead. I decided to order the "sushi regular" which was 10 nigiri at the chefs discretion a little salad and a California roll. The sushi was soft and cool and flavorful. The rice was of high quality and fresh. I wish the cuts of fish were larger as they seemed more compact than what other Santa Fe sushi restaurants offer. The little salad was crisp and flavorful. The California roll left a little to be desired as it was skimpy. It was delicious it just needed more ingredients on the inside. The wasabi was face melting... which I like.
There is a big TV over the sushi bar to watch sports and get a beer. The waiter I talked with was friendly and gave good service. The sushi chef seemed shy or reserved when I tried to speak with him... or maybe he doesn't speak lots of English...

TL;DR - Food is delicious but portions are a bit on the small side. Give this place a try!

On a busy strip of Cerillos Rd, one small strip mall after another, lo and behold a really good and fairly inexpensive Japanese restaurant. Good prices on Bento Boxes for lunch -- plenty of food, includes soup and salad. Good deal also on the lunch sashimi and sushi specials. Love the soba noodles with shrimp, generous portion. Only been there for lunch, but it is becoming a 'go to' choice. Menu has lots of choices.

I selected this restaurant because it was close by and offered something other than the Santa Fe style fare I had been enjoying all week, The food and service was much more than I anticipated. Excellent Japanese food, excellent service and all at an exceptional price. A gem of a place.
