“Decent food, nice piano entertainment”
Reviewed 23 February 2014 via mobile

I took advantage of the Restaurant Week prix fixe menu and had a soup, beef filet, and dessert for much less than the full menu cost of each individual item. I think that what was offered was certainly worth it at that price point. I'm not sure I'd pay full price. The food was quite good, but I don't think they were of the caliber expected at full price.

I stayed for about an hour in the bar/lounge taking in the live entertainment of self-accompanied singing on the piano to various tunes from oldies, jazz, to classic rock and pop. This is certainly a place you might want to drop in for an hour or so to enjoy a drink and some music.

“Great piano bar near downtown”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

Nice piano bar near downtown Santa Fe. Tucked away near the plaza ( a few blocks from the Plaza), Vanessie is a piano bar with lively pianists (Doug and Bob) who play a wide range of music (from the 1920's to Billy Joel and the Beatles). Food is okay but it is better for an after dinner venue.

“The New Formula is not working...sorry.”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

Vanessie dining has never had "great" food. It has been "good" food at decent prices. However, they have increased their prices significantly and the just "good" food at high prices suddenly makes it a poor formula. The atmosphere is exceptional because the building is quite beautiful...the service is average...and the food is overpriced and now "fair". We paid $65 for an overcooked steak and a lobster tail, broccoli and too soft mashed potatoes. The butter had lemon added and a red chile tone which made for an unexpected and not great flavor ie: lobster should be served with drawn butter. period. If you want to add an additional flavor...fine...but don't mess with the standby that people expect. I could have requested plain drawn butter...but the server never returned to the table. The steak was overdone. The broccoli was boring...and the potatoes were flavorless. I actually added salt to all of it...which I have NEVER done in a restaurant of any caliber. The lamb was conversely undercooked and the sides...the same. All together. $130 without drinks. Unfortunate. Oh, and the entire restaurant was empty...so there really was no reason the meal and service couldn't be properly executed. The bar was full...but in Santa Fe...you have to be able to execute the meal if you are going to be a restaurant...right? As to the piano bar...Doug is quite good...but the girl who accompanied him was actually quite poor. It was difficult to listen to...even in the other room. Pitchy, overdone and affected. Add the unnecessary commentary on her personal life and it was over the top. Needless to say...if you walk into any restaurant in Santa Fe that is empty - there is a reason for it. Just leave. We have eaten at Vanessie many times over the years...and the combination of "good food at decent prices with good service" has been fine. But, something they are doing is not working and we regretfully won't be going back...unless it is to sit in the bar; which is obviously what people do. But THAT does not pull in this town for a restaurant.

Reviewed 29 December 2013

A friend had told us to be sure to eat at Vanessie's and listen to Doug Montgomery. We thought we'd go have a glass if wine and stay about 30 min. Well, we stayed for 3 hrs. , had a great dinner( fish and chips) and enjoyed Doug play the piano so much! Loved it!
