“Charming southwestern B&B near the heart of SantaFe”
Reviewed 15 November 2008

This was our first experience with a bed and breakfast setting and we found it charming.
I liked the private entrance off a patio and the furnishings.
The bed was awesome and just perfect after a day of sightseeing.
Breakfast was abundant and well prepared.
A little noise as we were in the SanteFe suite and the school children are loud in the morning.

  • Liked — The awesome bed
  • Disliked — We had some issues with needing to change resevation. Staff very slow in responding.

I recently returned from an eight day stay in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I started my stay at the Hottel Santa Fe and was very pleased with the accommodation, and was a little sorry when it was time to transfer to the Don Gaspar Inn.

Was I wrong. The Don Gapar was head and shoulders above the Hotel Santa Fe in charm, ambiance and facilities.

The Inn is made up of three house, whose grounds have been densely planted in perennials, shrubs and trees. There is a central courtyard with a lovely terra cotta fountain. A winding brick path joins the houses and the communal breakfast area, which in cold weather is a bright, welcoming sun room off the back of one of the house, and in good weather is out on a lovely brick patio.

I stayed in the Courtyard Casita, which was warmly and elegently furnished with antiques and local arts and crafts. There were a number of quite expensive-looking coffee-table books with information about the local environs. There was a luxurious bathroom with whirlpool, and a big, beautifully decorated bedroom with a gorgeous stained glass window, king-sized bed, and big screen TV.

There's a lovely full kitchen. As someone who loves to cook but whose career keeps them away from home many nights, I just loved shopping at the nearby Farmer's Market at Railyard, then coming home to my casita to cook breakfast (and quite a few dinners). My only quibble would be that the kitchen could use a chef's knife or two; chopping veggies with a butter knife wasn't the best.

Don't let the maps fool you. You might think the Don Gaspar is way out of the Plaza (downtown) area of Santa Fe. The map is deceiving; Santa Fe is a tiny place, and the Plaza is only about a 10 to 12 minute walk away. The area felt very safe. I didn't hesitate to head back into the Plaza area at night to see a concert at the Lensic, and walk home afterwards.

Breakfast was great, and your hosts are extremely helpful with advice about things to do and places to see. There's a computer in the breakfast room if you want to Google Map your route for the day.

I will definitely return to the Don Gaspar if I am in the area again.

  • Liked — Charming, relaxing ambiance
  • Disliked — I really have no substantial complaint. I thought the kitchen could use more equipment, but that's a minor quibble, and only an issue with serious cooks.

Quiet location was a short walk to the plaza. Charming setting and landscaping. Wonderful breakfast-yummy. Our room left a lot to be desired. Sofa was rather dirty and worn. Bedding was old and overused. Whole room needed an update and rehab. Worst thing was that the room wasn't very clean. Dirt and dust in the corners, behind the dresser, bed and other furniture. For the price I wouldn't stay there again.

  • Liked — breakfast and woman who hosted breakfast--charming and helpful
  • Disliked — room wasn't clean, furniture old and worn

After five wonderful days of R&R at Don Gaspar, I came away with fond memories of ample and tasty breakfasts, friendly chats with the various staff members, gentle sounds of the fountain outside my comfortable room and the sight and scent of many colorful flowers and fruit trees gracing the walkway and garden. I highly recommend this hospitable inn as a home base for exploring Santa Fe and surrounding sights.

My husband and I spent 5 days at the Don Gaspar to do some shopping and attend the Wine & Chile Fiesta. We love Santa Fe, and on our last visit we stayed in a different B&B that was very nice and had larger rooms, but was further from the plaza and much more expensive. Though our room was a little small, it still had a mini fridge and sitting area, plus a patio facing the lovely courtyard and fountain...the perfect place to relax with a good bottle of wine. Best of all was Anna, the day manager, who prepared sumptuous breakfasts (even shared recipes when asked), and was full of recommendations and amusing anecdotes. We wish the Gaspar had an afternoon wine and snack hour as did the previous B&B we stayed in, but for the price and location, we'd stay here again.

My wife and I spent four terrific days at the Don Gaspar Inn. It's located in a residential neighborhood within easy walking distance of the Plaza.

The suite was spacious and attractive with a wonderful Jacuzzi tub/shower and a peach tree outside our front door.

Breakfast was always delightful with enough options to accommodate any taste and the setting offered indoor or outdoor dining to fit one's mood.

Anna was gracious, entertaining and informative. She alerted us to the incredbile art displays in the state capitol, negelcted by all the guide books.

Can't say enough good things about the Don Gaspar Inn. My wife and I stayed for a long weekend in the Fountain Casita. The fountain outside of our suite was ultra calming and the courtyard in general was wonderful.

Anna, our wonderful host in the mornings, was an excellent chef and could not have treated us more kindly. She even pointed out locations for us to visit that suited our needs/wants.

Breakfast outside was incredible and the patio was still full of flowers and incredibly kept landscaping.

The suite itself was very inviting. Large living room for a B&B suite, with a full-kitchen, microwave, coffee pot, fully furnished place-settings, and tea/coffee/popcorn complimentary. King bed had satin sheets on it and very comfortable(soft) mattress). Plenty of closet and dresser space. In room ceiling fan was a nice touch for warmer nights.

Air conditioning didn't work great, but kept the place cool enough. Typical bathroom...pedestal sink, tall shower/bath combo. Good enough for the value.

Easy walking distance to the plaza...if you need to drive you can, but don't worry about it. Safe parking in the back of the B&B.

Overall, 5 stars for excellent service and great location! Would definitely return to the Don Gaspar if returning to Santa Fe. Can't go wrong with it.
