So glad we stopped here! This is an excellent local restaurant. The service is both fast and friendly. The menu is huge, with local favorites. Home made breads. The food was excellent, we went there twice on our short weekend trip it was so good.

Had breakfast at Brookside this morning. Food was just OK...but would have been a whole lot better if the waitress had spent more time attending to our table as opposed to yakking with some guy near the cash register. Food arrived lukewarm after quite a wait. Waitress didn't feel the need to ask if we needed anything after finally delivering the food. Was everything OK? Did we want more coffee? etc. Didn't happen. She became friendly at tip time when she brought the check. We were one of three occupied tables in the whole place...so there was no excuse for the neglect. Got the distinct impression that she assumed we were tourists, not the case...live in the area and most likely will not be back. Two eggs and country ham with potatoes and toast were 8.50 an omellete was 8.75...too high to put up with lukewarm food and awful service.

This place is quiet and feels like home. We had a wonderful server Martha, super sweet. I got a roasted turkey sandwich with Gravy and stuffing, very good. Everything is fresh!

We are a local group who get together for a monthly drive somewhere within a two hour radius to have lunch. Several of our members had eaten here before and everyone agreed it is an excellent place to go as a small group. The wait staff are very cordial and go out of their way at being "home-style friendly". It is hard to find a place to please everyone, but our group of ten agreed that this was a very enjoyable lunch. There was a choice between the menu or a steaming hot buffet and they even serve breakfast all day long. Our group seemed half and half menu/buffet, The buffet was changed several times while we ate and as we were in a slow and leisurely mode we enjoyed the variety. The owners came by and introduced themselves and seemed genuinely concerned that we were having an enjoyable experience. Most of our group have traveled extensively around the country, and even internationally, and have a lot of experience to draw upon in rating restaurants. All agreed this is a "great little local place"! In addition to the restaurant, there is a gift shop with a good selection of "local treasures" reflecting the Shenandoah Valley area. They also have a selection of cabins which have been renovated and overlook the rambling brook which gives this establishment it's name. While always striving for somplace new, our group agreed that they would definately come back to the Brookside!

While camping in the area this restaurant came highly recommended by locals. We had a large group that showed up without reservations for dinner. As the place was not busy they quickly put tables together to accommodate our 10 people. Our waitress was very nice and offered great service..... and that was the end of anything good on this visit. My husband ordered a steak. The steak was very thin and full of fat. I've never seen so much grease on a steak or on a plate. And for a price of $20 you would expect more. This was the worst steak he had ever had. My burger was bland and greasy. Two of the meals... both chicken came out burnt beyond being edible. The cooks nor the waitress should have never even considered sending a dish that burnt to the table. The waitress was quick to take it back and replace with new when we complained.
Out of 10 meals ordered not one was even close to being a great or even good meal. The grilled chicken sandwich was cold in the center. The portions of the sides were small and all seemed to be out of a box or a can. The buffet offered only a handful of items that looked like they had been there for quite some time.
We had planned on breakfast there the following morning but after a dinner that left us queasy we decided against it. I would not recommend this place nor would I ever return. My family and I travel a lot. We rarely eat fast food and always enjoy hidden gems and down home cooking. After this experience I think next time I'm in the area I will take my chances at the MacDonald's down the road.
