“Nice river view”
Reviewed 2 December 2015 for a stay in November 2015

Cabin was clean, well stocked, as advertised. Hot tub is a welcome addition. We canoed even though it was raining. Fire pit was wonderful, right next to the river.
Driving directions were perfect and online reservations easy.
One bathroom was ok for us but the toilet needs updating - flushes very slowly and is touchy. (Cushy seat reminded me of an old folks home haha).

“Everything You Need and Right on the River”
Reviewed 11 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We stayed in the cabin for about a week with our two teens. The cabin was the perfect size for us--two bedrooms, living room space, kitchen with table, and bathroom. It was very clean inside. Would have loved to have a second bathroom but it worked out fine having one. The boys room has a double bed underneath with a bunk bed over it--this worked out well for the boys who liked the separate bed space and also loved having their own TV in the room. When they say everything is provided except your clothes, food, and toiletries--it is actually true. So nice to have towels and linens provided. The kitchen was well set up with dishes, glasses, pots, pans, cutting boards...really everything you need. The only thing missing is a dishwasher although they provide all you need for handwashing. Coffee maker and microwave also provided (including filters for the coffee maker). There was a DVD collection, games, etc. all provided as well. A washer and dryer (with detergent and dryer sheets) is down the stairs in a utility room--nice to have separate so you can run anytime without bothering anyone. The deck has a gas grill, hot tub and table for up to about six people although four is more comfortable. Loved the hot tub. Note that the deck is not covered or screened so at night you are going to have to deal with the moths and bugs that are attracted in droves to any light you turn on (which would be the case any place that isn't screened). However, I will say we did not have an issue at all with mosquitos - none of the bugs bit or stung; just annoying. And if it rains, the deck is not really usable. The yard is long and goes right down to the river (which you can see easily from the deck). They have a firepit about mid-way down and another right at the river. They supply plenty of wood which is great! You do have a neighbor on the left and right but enough space that it wasn't a problem. And pretty much any place on the river will have neighbors. We did not use the bikes because we didn't see a good place to do so--the gravel road is not heavily traveled but when cars/trucks do go down, dust goes everywhere so I wouldn't be on a bike on the road. Didn't really see any convenient trails into the National Forest so it provides some nice privacy but didn't really use it (admittedly we didn't try very hard to find access). The river is pretty low in front of the cabin (we went kayaking and it is pretty darn low the whole stretch of that portion of the Shenandoah). We enjoyed wading into it (the boys crossed it). Bring water shoes because the bottom of the Shenandoah is very rocky. The cabin is very convenient to Luray as well as the National Park. There is an outfitter nearby but I'd recommend using another one even if farther away; didn't find the outfitter very helpful and the river again in that stretch in just way too low for kayaks or really even tubing (lots of carrying the kayak rather than paddling it). A small part of the yard really isn't usable because of what I assume is a drainage area for the septic tank area (corded off) but there is plenty of room beyond it. Overall, a nice place to relax and use as "headquarters" to visit the national park and the caverns. I wouldn't recommend this area in general as wonderful for kayaks or canoes (at least not in August) because of the shallow water with rocky bottom. However, if you enjoy relaxing by a fire pit during chilly nights, soaking in a hot tub, visiting the park, wading into the water's edge (water is perfect temperature) and just having some good family time, this is a great place for that. And again, the cabin is well equipped so all you need is your clothes, toiletries, and food. I will also say that the owners have done a very good job in providing directions and instructions for different things withint the cabin as well as a notebook with descriptions of nearby activities, An added note -tthis is not a good place for anyone with mobility issues--house is on stilts so must climb stairs to get to main house; totally fine for us with our teens-would not have been fine for someone with less mobility.

“Beautiful cabin on the Shenandoah River”
Reviewed 12 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stayed at Bear Valley for 3 nights with our 3 grandchildren (13, 6, 4). The cabin is located on the Shenandoah River with a beautiful view of the river and a flat yard where the grandkids played. Grandpa and grandson used the canoes to paddle on the river, while the girls and Grandma spent some time relaxing in the hot tub. During our stay we visited Luray Caverns, the museums, and the hedge maze plus did a little hiking. Always nice to return to the cabin in the evening to enjoy roasting marshmallows by the campfire. We had a wonderful time!

“Everything were were lookin for!”
Reviewed 25 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Bear Valley River Cabin was the perfect place for our family of five stay for the night on the Shenandoah River. We needed to find a place for just one night before heading home from a backpacking trip that accommodated at least five people and a dog and had a hot tub and canoes available to use on the river. It was just right! The cabin was super clean and organized and was located in a beautiful setting. I would definitely recommend this cabin. I do think it would be difficult to sleep seven people (more like six comfortably ) unless at least 2 are preteen kids. And although it was fine for us for our shirt stay, I'm not sure how comfortable it would be if we were to stay a whole week with our 3 boys and only one bathroom!

“Very enjoyable adventurous weekend!”
Reviewed 8 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

We couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend! We toured Luray Caverns, canoed and tubed 9 miles, enjoyed fishing and biking during the day and had bonfires and relaxed in the hot tub in the evenings. Plenty of interesting activities to keep teenagers happy, will definitely be returning.
