It has been three weeks since our weekend getaway and the experience is still resonates with me. This is the FIRST vacation where I didn't need another vacation when I came home! Our Dragonfly cabin looked like it was straight out of a magazine and the atmosphere was so therapeutic and charming. But SME went above and beyond. Every little detail, down to the fresh baked treats, were so wonderfully thought out, it made the whole experience so memorable. I have already told my friends about this hidden gem and will continue to spread the word!

Room Tip: If you want to cook a few meals, I would recommend getting a cabin with a full kitchen :))

It’s hard to start – it’s hard to separate the best of the best about SME. They nailed it for sure, this is a great place and they are great hosts. Felix the cat is a wonderful co-host as well. We wanted to find a place to reflect on our past year where we were slapped in the face with a dose of reality about life – I had to have bi-cuspid aortic valve replaced with an artificial mechanical valve. This weekend was our 1 year “valve” anniversary. SME was/is the perfect spot for this sort of life event. It’s quiet, dark at night, close to the Appalachian Trail and home to many critters passing thru. We hiked up to Mary’s Rock on a beautiful sunny day and explored the beautiful county that surrounds SME. The baked goods that Karen provides are super. The pumpkin cake may win another ribbon at the County Fair. Their hearts are in this place, it shows with every little detail. We’ve already booked again for May!

Room Tip: woops, no POOL! but beautiful stream

My husband and I visited SME for a week on our honeymoon, and it was a fantastic decision. The scenery of Shenandoah was gorgeous (even during winter), the cabin (we stayed in the dragonfly) was beautiful, and most of all, Karen & Ralph were amazing hosts. They left wine for us, were constantly bringing us freshly baked sweets, and even shared mulled wine over the campfire with us after it snowed. I would highly recommend this place to any couple wanting some peace and quiet, and some time together. It's a magical place.

We chose this for our honeymoon and we couldn't be happier with our choice. The bumblebee cabin was outstanding! The grounds are beautiful! It's literally a little piece of paradise at the base of the Shenandoah National Park. If all you do is relax and enjoy the nature walks you'll be thrilled with your choice to stay here. Ralph and Karen are great hosts and do all they can to make sure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. I even caught a glimps of them snuggling as they walked by the pond and I believe Karen just might make the best cookies on the East Coast. Don't forget to say hi to Felix the cat when you sit by the campfire to enjoy your wine and whiskey from the Blueridge Tour. This was our first stay here but surely will not be our last. I HIGHLY recommend SME for your getaway! You will not be disappointed!

My husband and I were so happy we found this little slice of heaven! As we celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary together, Mike and I marveled at all the beauty surrounding us from the intricate details of all the German relics to the architecture of the timberframe to the deer dancing and feeding on corn as Karen stood among them. Karen and Ralph thought of everything to make our stay memorable and relaxing. The home baked cookies, biscotti, and cake were delicious. We enjoyed a complimentary marshmallow roast on Saturday night and it felt like you could reach up and touch the stars. What a sight to behold! We can't wait to book the Bumblebee again for another enchanting stay!

Room Tip: The bumblebee has a gorgeous stone fireplace that keeps you warm and toasty! The pictures of the ca...

We throughly enjoyed our stay here, it is a beautiful and secluded property The cabins are amazing, and the Bumblebee cabin that we stayed in was just perfect. Even had an extra treat with waking up to the snow-covered ground and trees on Valentine Day's morning. We enjoyed our coffee in the observation tower as the sun came over the mountain, watching the snow covered trees glisten in the early morning sunlight. We later took a walk in the snow on the nature trail, and were thrilled to have Felix escort us around the property, she is an adorable cat. Again it was a wonderful couple days and a perfect getaway for my wife and I to spend our 12 year anniversary and Valentine's Day together.

My husband and I found the reviews for Shadow Mountain Escape when we were planning our honeymoon and decided then we wanted to go there. Karen went above and beyond our expectations. She was very helpful during the entire process from booking through our stay. The basket of goodies awaiting us when we arrived was delicious, not to mention the extra treats left throughout our stay.

We stayed in the Butterfly Loft, which was clean, quiet, and comfortable. Though the weather was very warm while we were there, the cooling unit in the cabin was more than enough to keep the room cool. The property was excellent for taking walks. Though all the cabins were filled while we were there, we never heard any of them and only saw them around the property. We saw deer each morning. We liked that the cabin had a kitchen, so we could eat in for some meals.

Ralph and Karen had excellent recommendations for area attractions and restaurants, including a notebook in the room. We would definitely visit again if the opportunity arose.

Room Tip: Butterfly Loft is a comfortable choice, especially if you would like a kitchen.
