My wife and I have made several trips to Shadow Mountain Escape dating back several years now, and we will continue to visit there for our getaways to the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley. The setting is scenic and tranquil you almost feel your blood pressure drop when you turn into the entrance to the property. There is lots of nice green space on the grounds that are well maintained by owners Karen and Ralph. Deer are common visitors seen in the mornings and evenings.

Regarding the lodging facilities, we have had the opportunity to stay in all three of the main timber cabins at SME and have enjoyed them all. They are well designed (nice job Ralph), nicely appointed, cozy and well maintained. Typically, guests arrive to find some freshly made goodies left on the table (thanks Karen). Karen is most often there to greet you shortly after arrival. Others on this website have already said it many different ways but Karen is one of nicest genuinely friendly people you will meet. The same is true of Ralph and together they are truly great hosts who make your comfort and enjoyment while staying with them their top priority.

SME is a great destination for many Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley sites. We often make the short trip up the road to the National Park to do some hiking. It is also near Luray Caverns, nice VA wineries, and places to do some fishing and boating.

We cannot wait for our next visit with Karen and Ralph

Room Tip: All cabins are great and each is differently designed and appointed so try to choose the one best suited to your preferences

We just returned from a couple of nights in the Butterfly cabin at SME and enjoyed it so much, we didn't want to leave!

From the moment we booked, all the information and communication provided by Karen (Karen and her hubby, Ralph are the proprietors) was amazing and concise! Once we arrived, she greeted us with the biggest smile and warmest welcome, and treated us like family!

The entire property is absolutely amazing! So perfectly designed by Ralph and maintained by the two of them. The cabins are of his design and are all timber framed and beautiful!

They have a full kitchen, with utensils... a grill outside and dining room which made it perfect for our first night's grilled steak dinner. After the dinner we enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the bon fire; they have a beautiful fire pit, with log seating surrounding it.

More time well-spent was the walk on the nature trail surrounding the property and checking out the beautiful stream. There's also a family of deer that are very friendly who hang around and stand beside you, while you're milling around the property - this was pretty amazing.

Finally, the location is PERFECT for those in the DC/Northern VA area, as it's only 1.5 hours from Northern VA, just over the Thornton Gap of Rt211. It's bordering the Shenandoah Nat'l Park, just down from Skyline Drive.

We look forward to returning and trying each of the other cabins!

We stayed here for two nights in early September and the moment we arrived we had already decided we would have liked to stay longer. The property is nestled in its own mini forest within a forest, surrounded by beautiful nature and wildlife. We stayed in Bear Dance Lodge which was two cabins conjoined in one building, perfect for two couples. The cabins are immaculate and very well equipped with high quality furnishings and appliances, with beautiful slate flooring and great oak beams. On arrival, Karen called at our cabin and she was so nice and enthusiastic with lots of great tips and advice about the property and the area, and not forgetting the fresh baked cookies she had left us. We had a fantastic stay in Shadow Mountain Escape, the owners Karen and Ralph are wonderful people and have worked hard to provide a really superb place to relax in comfort and luxury whilst enjoying the Shenandoah area. We really, really do plan on returning sometime as we felt so relaxed and content in SME.

Room Tip: Bear Dance Lodge perfect for two couples.

We spent one night in the Butterfly cabin. The proprieter, Karen, was so welcoming and personable. We were greeted by Felix the friendly cat and 4 whitetail deer roaming through the property. The cabin itself was just perfect and romantic. Later, we had a marshmallow roast over a roaring fire in a stone fire ring near the cabin. The only sound was that of crickets and our clear view of stars was so very special. Exceptional!

This magical place really exceeded our expectations - every little detail is amazing and one can feel the love and devotion they have poured into the cabins to make people feel welcomed and happy. We loved everything about this place! We are leaving replenished and relaxed and with the wish to return some other time!
