“A very nice escape!”
Reviewed 5 January 2010

My husband and I stayed in the "Bumble Bee" cabin at Shadow Mountain Escape for three nights for a mini-vacation. We chose Bumble Bee because of the large stone fireplace it features and were eager to use it during the cold days and nights! It was well worth it to get the fireplace! With the snow as a backdrop, sitting in front of the fire was a perfect relaxing escape.

The cabin was delightfully decorated and had all of the amenities we could have wanted. The kitchen was well equipped and made it so we didn't have to go out for every meal. Karen's basket of goodies waiting when we arrived was a treat and she even dropped off cocoa and marshmallows for us to enjoy later in our visit!

There were two reasons I didn't give SME 5 stars: The first (that I didn't notice anyone else mention) is that they do not take credit cards. You have to pay either cash or check. As someone who travels a lot, that is an inconvenience. The second reason is that the layout of Bumble Bee could be better. The only bathroom that Bumble Bee has is off of the kitchen, and the bedroom is upstairs. So to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night meant walking down the stairs in the dark through the entire cabin. In addition, the sitting room where the fireplace is was quite small-the sofa didn't even sit across from the fireplace-it was perpendicular to it. The cabin was just built several years ago, so it seemed like the layout could have been planned better when the cabin was built.

Overall, we had a wonderful visit and with our love of the outdoors, look forward to the time when we can return to Shadow Mountain Escape for another relaxing vacation!

Our favorite mountain "Escape!" My family has been visiting SME since 2003 and return every year at least once! Luray is a unique little town and so fun to shop in the antique and craft shops. "Bucks" has the best food and don't go home without trying one of their famous burgers! Then back to serenity (SME)! My boy's are outside from sunup to sundown exploring the woods, spotting the wildlife such as deer, fishing in the pond, and hiking and playing in the creeks. They never want to leave when it's time to go! The owner's Karen and Ralph make you feel like family and are very hospitable. We will return!!!

This is not a B&B, nor is it a cabin. Instead it is like having your own little Post and Beam cottage right inside the park. Actually, park grounds start on the other side of the road from the property, Like a small country estate with only 3 buildings, one of which is the owner's.
Karen and Ralph were most hospitable leaving Karen's award winning cookies as a treat.
The on premises tourtiseshell cat, Felix, was charming. But mostly you are left to your own devices. If you are looking for a get away experience and don't want to be catered to every minute this is heaven. Clean, roomy, charming and romantic. My wife and I stayed in the Butterfly. A spacious but cozy studio like apartment with full bath and kitchen. We ate out during our stay but the kitchen is modern and you can easily cook or barbque on the provided outdoor grill.

Our stay at Shadow Mountain Escape

The warmest of welcomes awaited us from Karen at Shadow Mountain Escape and the first thing we appreciated was the total peace and quiet except for the twittering of the birds, the knocking of the woodpecker and the burble of the stream on the woodland walk.
Our lodge, “Dragonfly” was a delight – beautifully decorated and so cosy – we instantly felt at home. To greet us was a tasty “Welcome” basket of cakes, biscuits and home made jam and an excellent bottle of wine – a treat to enjoy later. Karen, the owner, is very friendly and explained all the details we needed to know, including that all would be made ready for a campfire with marshmallows to toast.
Our family enjoyed such a special time. A particular bonus was an invitation from Karen to attend a Rotary meeting in Luray . I am a Rotarian in the UK and my wife and I always enjoy visiting other clubs, especially those extending such a warm welcome as that in Luray.
As we gazed at the stars in the incredibly clear sky, around the campfire, we appreciated this respite from a busy world and made a wish to return soon.

The only words I can think of to describe this wonderful place! Absolutely fantastic!

Such a wonderful place to relax and absorb so much beauty! I spent my life in hotels and very little time at home. Our stay here was the best of both worlds’ travel to a new location, and still feeling at home! Karen and Ralph will and did make every effort to make you/us feel comfortable, right down to the emergency Bloody Mary supplies! Thank you so much - we will be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Butterfly loft. The goodies and wine were delicious. The lodge was delightful. We used our rainy day to visit Luray Caverns - which was like Bryce Canon - but underground. Thursday we were surprised to find snow in the Shenandoah National Park. It didn't last long and brought the deer to the roadsides to eat grass in the sun. I'm sure we saw more than 100 up close and personal. (We'll have to come back to meet that bear!) We rode skyline and hiked to Dark Hollow and Rose River Falls - both beautiful. Last night we had Mexican food at Rancho Viejo. It was really delicious and explains why there were so many cars in the parking lot. We had a relaxing, peaceful time on your beautiful property.

My girlfriend and I recently celebrated our 10-year anniversary by spending 2 nights at Shadow Mountain Escape. We were greeted by Karen (who was amazing!) when we arrived, and she showed us the Butterfly Loft. She had left wine and homemade cookies for us, which was a great touch! The property was beautiful, especially with all the snow. The loft itself was adorable (and warm enough for the freezing nights that we spent there). There's a TV with satellite and a DVD player, for when you want to relax after exploring the area all day. There was also a balcony that was great for taking long-exposure pictures of the stars at night. The bed was very comfortable, and there were a few power outlets to charge cameras, phones, and other gadgets. Cell phone coverage is spotty on the property...but when you're trying to get away from work and everything, that's not a bad thing.

Luray is about 10 minutes away... there are a bunch of restaurants (we tried Brookside and Brown's Chinese), as well as a couple supermarkets and a Walmart (which we visited to grab food to make for breakfast in the loft's kitchen). There's also Luray Caverns, which I'd recommend checking out. In the other direction you have Skyline Dr., inside Shenandoah National Park (which was the reason we wanted to visit this area in the first place). Skyline Dr. was closed for the first and second day we were there due to ice, but opened on the third.

We thoroughly enjoyed spending our anniversary here, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic getaway and/or an outdoors adventure!

  • Liked — great location from which to explore Shenandoah NP and Luray, the comfort of the loft, Karen!
  • Disliked — Normally it would be the lack of cell phone service/internet...but that's what I was escaping from!
