Hired Neil for a 3hr wildlife tour of the surrounding waters. Great experience for my two kids (5 & 8). We got lucky and had a calm/sunny day on the water. Staff was so kind and super nice to our kids. We saw whales, puffins and other wildlife. Thanks for the experience. Ps. Don’t bring bananas on the boat!

That was such a beautiful day. Charlie and Lucy are great! Imagine how epic it could have been if only the bananas didn't come aboard lol. Thanks Paul!

We picked this tour due to the humor of the author on their disclaimer regarding wildlife. Visiting friends in Sitka, we had a day to ourselves and wanted to go exploring. We ended up on the boat with Neil and Elona (sp?) and what a treat!

They were very knowledgable, it wasn't scripted and we had a wonderful time. Worth every penny! We highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to get some history, see wildlife and enjoy 3-4 hours one day while visiting Sitka.

Thank you,
Heidei Reynolds

We recently toured with Captain Neil to Lazaria for birding. The naturalist onboard was excellent and if the seas were not so rough it would have been awesome. As we sailed out of the harbor the seas because increasingly rougher. There was repeatedly pounding down from waves that made the ride very uncomfortable. One in the party had a history of back issues and the longer we were out the more we regretted getting onboard. There was another person onboard who vomited all the way out to the island and back. She wanted to continue regardless. We did see birds when we finally arrived at Lazaria but we feel that there was an error in judgement on the captains part. I think that he should have cancelled the trip or turned back rather than make the entire trip to Lazaria. We met other people who were booked for tours that day with other companies but those trips were cancelled by several other tour operators due to the sea conditions.

Our passengers’ comfort and safety are our primary concern, had I known that you were not happy with your tour with us, or that any of our passengers had a concern about comfort or safety, I assure you that all concerns would have taken into consideration, and addressed accordingly. I am dismayed that we had a passenger with back problems, this was a situation of which I was not aware. Additionally, I am unaware of any other tours who cancelled on that day. I was repeatedly checking in with the woman who was ill, and she was determined to keep going so although the seas were a bit rough, they were still safe and we continued the trip. A Whales Song Expeditions is committed to our customers and always strive to give the very best experience possible!

A three hour trip out to St Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge on a glorious day, with glittering sea, and the pewter mountains of Baranof Island behind us wisped in morning mist. Even though I was the only person signed up for the trip, Neil still took me out; he usually needs more people, but he is so passionate about the marine life, he just wanted to share it.
Neil is an informative and amusing guide, delighting in sharing visuals and information about the local marine wildlife: a raft of sea otters being tickled by floating fronds of kelp; harbor seals hauled out to bask; and, of course, whales spouting. Snugged in the shelter of Lazaria, we watched two humpbacks diving, and spouting as they surfaced every few minutes. “Shallow-diving,” Neil said, “they’re not staying down as long.” We had a ring-side view of them, yet Neil respected the ethics about staying far enough away so as to not disturb them. The whales announced their presence with a bloooosh of breath, their grey backs gleaming, slick with cascading water. They cruised briefly, before humping and arcing under, leaving the surface behind them smooth – a telltale of their visit. For half an hour these great creatures graced us with their presence, before diving and disappearing, breaking the spell they had over me. Ashore, gulls wheeled and cried, while around us an ‘improbability’ of horned and tufted puffins spotted the sea brightly with orange and yellow. We headed out to the ocean side of Lazaria, riding the swells along with a large ‘fragrance’ of murres, as bald eagles flew overhead, to make a ‘convocation’ in the island’s wind-pruned trees. Neil had me laughing with the collective nouns of animals, he’d recently researched. Although it was not the peak time of year to see whales, Neil was a great guide, making it fun, interesting and well worthwhile. It will remain a high point of my visit to Sitka.

That was one of my favorite trips. It is always great to have such an enthusiastic guest on board. Especially one as fun and excited to see all we saw. Keep warm in Fairbanks.

An excellent choice for exploring nature in Sitka Sound. This is a small boat, max 4 passengers plus captain Neil and a naturalist, so there is more flexibility in where the boat can go , or for changing course to follow a whale. The day I was on the A Whale’s Song tour, we saw a sea otter mom floating on her back with a pup on her belly, puffins in flight, a flock of pelagic cormorants, and the spouts, tails, and fins if humpback whales. In the three hours, we saw gorgeous landscapes, and learned a lot about the history and nature of the islands. Always felt safe, too. I would recommend A Whale’s Song for a uniquely personal experience on the waters off Sitka.
