“A Wonderful wilderness experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2013

This Wilderness Lodge has amazing scenery, with Mountain lakes, rivers an amazing hot pool
The staff at Baranoff are fantastic, friendly but very professional and the food is delicious. And of course the fishing is plentiful and exciting. Mike and Sally are wonderful hosts and very passionate at what they do.

Talk about an on top of this world experience! Our trip started off with flying in over snow peaked mountains and landing in the bay! The lodge is serene, peaceful, and is surrounded by indescribable beauty. Mike Trotter could not be a more perfect Santa, unwrapping the next days' presents each evening after dinner. The "Fun Board" is a personalized list of options that each family or group can choose to embark upon the following day. Mike teaches about the ecosystems of fish in Alaska while getting everyone excited about the next days adventure. Why not go salmon fishing tomorrow???? Or for halibut? Or, fly fish in an Alaskan stream? Or, hike to the hot springs? Or, do some whale watching? Or, go shrimping, clamming, or crabbing? There's something for all ages. The staff and guides are highly skilled and world class! It was an unforgettable experience for our entire family.

Baranof Wilderness Lodge is a remote and pristine lodge set in the scenic Southeast Alaska mountains with world class salt water and fresh water fishing all around and an abundance of spectacular wildlife. The "Lodge" has 5 star accommodations with separate private cabins for the guests, unbelievable meals, a very hospitable staff, and most modern amenities and luxuries that you would not expect to find in a remote mountain setting. But if you prefer to “rough” it more and truly submerse yourself in the Alaskan wilderness, then the "Basecamp" is definitely for you. You stay in propane heated canvas tents, you can assist in cooking your own meals, and you sleep at the base of a mountain and at water’s edge, with the surreal noises of SE Alaska reverberating off the high mountain walls of the bay. Both the Lodge and the Basecamp offer exceptional fishing and wildlife experiences and the choice between the two is really just a matter of personal preference.

As for the wildlife, the diversity and sheer number of species you can see in SE Alaska is hard to beat anywhere in the world. You will not have the concentration of humpback whales, orcas, bears, bald eagles, etc. anywhere else in AK or anywhere in the world for that matter. It is not unusual to see several humpbacks or orcas at close range, countless sea lions, a dozen or so bears, and hundreds of bald eagles in 1 morning or afternoon.

As for the fishing at Baranof, you can catch all 5 pacific salmon (silvers, kings, pinks, chums, & sockeyes), world class halibut (300+ lbs), lingcod, rock fish and much more in the salt water. In the fresh water systems you can catch salmon, cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden (aka arctic char) and occasionally you can hook into a big steelhead! Simply stated, the fishing is absolutely world class! And the fresh water salmon fishing is the perfect way for a beginner to learn to fly fish while the more experienced fly fishermen can go for silvers or kings, big Dolly Vardens, cutthroat, or steelhead all in close proximity to one another! Of course, the guides provide spinning rods as well if fly fishing isn’t your thing. Whether you’re a quality or a quantity fisherman, SE Alaska has it all!

Another thing that certainly deserves mentioning is the quality of the staff. They are extremely hard working, yet always friendly and accommodating. It speaks to the quality of the staff and the attraction of the region that almost every member of the team has been coming back summer after summer for several years. Also, the large majority of clients are repeat clients – many having ventured to Baranof 10+ times! I have been nowhere else in my life where the customer retention and satisfaction numbers can compare!

Remember that line from Winnie the Pooh, where he said, "it is anything can happen day"??? That is how we felt at Mike and Sally's lodge!! I don't think i have the vocabulary to express what an amazing time my fiance, Alvin, and I had!! It was SO MUCH fun!!! Let me tell you, Mike and Sally personally great you as you arrive by float plane ( oh! that was SUPER fun) ...not only them but their staff, What a GREAT group of people they have working there... !!! We learned so much from them, Let me tell you, this review is months coming, we stayed there last July. and I should have written sooner.

Our week at Baranof Wilderness Lodge was a highlight of the year. Wonderful, knowledgeable staff. Individualized opportunities for a variety of activities. One day fishing (superb guides) the next seeing whales, eagles and bears. Great food! All in one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Alaska. Can't wait to visit again.

My husband and I had a wonderful adventure every day at the Baranof Wilderness Lodge. From the moment we get off the plane we were well taken care of by the staff at BWL. We had the chance to reel in different fish species, set shrimp pots, see all kinds of wildlife, hike to the warm springs and we even got to get a relaxing message. The cabins were nice, clean and had a picturesque view. Everyday, we were served delicious meals. At night, meals are served family style, It was wonderful to hear the others share their day experiences. We could plan out our next days adventure and have all our Alaskan dreams come true with the help of Mike and Sally Trotter and their amazing staff.

Room Tip: All the rooms are close to lodge for easy access.

My son and I were fortunate to be able to attend the Kelp Bay Base Camp in August of 2012. Nothing but the finest of memories were taken from that Summer.

BWL has the Greatest crew, takes the utmost care in your safety and comfort, and provides you with the most unforgettable experiences.

The natural Spruce Shelter that canopies the camp is unbelievable. The fishing, gear and company is really 2nd to none. The FOOD, well Dutch has a skill that he developed over years and years to prepare some of the freshest seafood, sides and appetizers that would envy anyone on the planet. He is fantastic with the Fly Rod and is extremely organized at the camp. Dutch really makes you feel like your living.

The excursions were mind blowing. Monday through Saturday we were geared up and in the boat by 800am. The river systems are an intense experience. Bears, swift water and large Dolly's every second of the day - every day. Charlie, our guide, has superb patience and is skilled in the ways of Kelp Bay. That guy can do anything and ensures that every guest is involved every step of the way.

This place, these people and everything that comes along with it, are one of the greatest treasures for outdoor recreation that can be had in Alaska. It was for me and my son. That is really saying a lot since I was born and raised in Southeast Alaska and lived there 35 years.

Thank you Mike, Sally, Dutch and Charlie. To many more adventures. I would rather spend my nights on the point with a glass of red and cedar sparks than anywhere in the world.

Best Fishes - Dean

Room Tip: The Camp closest to the "Growler" may be beneficial to some!
